4 speed shifter boot and trim ring question

does boot flange go between the carpet and hump?

All the ones I have ran across the boot and ring goes on top of the carpet. Makes more sense as you note above but imagine trimming and tightening the trim ring down. One the carpet would be sticking out or pulled out from the ring and the ring would be warped once tightened down.

Agree. If the carpet was under it would absorb water from the bottom of the car when it rained.
