It only needs to be deep enough to slide it in.Too deep of a hole is a waste. Also, to make sure it fits just right, it's not a bad idea to lube the hole up and slide the shaft in an out many times. However, keep in mind that if it's an old hole, the fit may be sloppy which is just no good at all.
