I'm building a 400 B engine for my 1972 Satelitte, A833, 3:55 gear.

It's going to be street driven a lot and was thinking of a stroker , mainly for torque at low rpm.

What will be best for a street driven car, 451, 472 or 500 ci.? Which one would last longer?

Also going to use original intake and Thermoquad because of Hood clearance with air grabber.

My 451 "B" was built in 2004,long hauled 2 Power Tours, put 30,000 street miles on it in 2 years.Took the stick out, installed a 727 and 4.10's and raced it (65 Belvedere N/SS E) to the tune of 11.90.In 2007 pulled the engine and put it in a 73 'Cuda with a Passion 4 speed overdrive, long hauled the Power Tour again.. The car still has that engine and at least another 10,000 miles. One of the best engine builds I ever owned.

None of the three is "best" or will inherently last longer. They all depend upon how you build and drive them. The stock intake manifold will choke the 451 less. Pick the one that gives you the most butterflies in the pit of your stomach and build that one.

I went with the 512 kit with dish Pistons to come in at approx 10:1 compression. I figured the kits cost the same so what the heck. Many have gone with that 470 and 451 kits from what I've seen. From the sounds of things, most all have been successful! But it is how it's built and then driven. Good luck.

Sounds really cool ... let's see some pics

I think it depends entirely on budget. Stroker (to me) means forget that intake and carb and forget stock heads. Easily will add at the very least $5000 or much more to your engine budget. Sounds like you have the complete motor already, so rebuilding that with higher than stock compression pistons, a nice cam and maybe some aluminum heads will probably get you mid 400 ft lbs of torque. Or you can spend that additional $5000 to $8000 for another 150 lt lbs.

Now that bein said, if none of my parts turn out to be junk, I will have build a budget 451 for something like $4000 out of pocket, but I'm patient and took several years and put a lot of effort in tracking down killer deals.

Of course, you could always find a nice 440 short block and build it instead of the 400...

400 stroked to 470. 585 hp/610 ft lbs of torque
