426? Help

1965 Hemi? (7-24-64) I think would be made July 24th, 1964
"HP" would be "High Performance)

That's the best I can do....the "A" is 65 engine,,,,"B" is 66...."C" is 67, and so on

I can't tell you anything else about the other numbers

A 65 model year sounds correct because earlier than that the displacement would have been two numbers in large font. For 64 it's V42 or V41 for 413. I believe "A" with the full displacement and smaller stamp started in 65. I suppose HP would indicate the Commando engine. The block casting ending in 230 sounds like a 413 or 426 casting.

That would be a 65 426 wedge,probably out of a C Body,Sport Fury or Polara.

That is the same as my 426 HP street wedge. Block born in 1964 for the 65 model year. Look at the top of the cylinder bore for a notch and if so then you have yourself a real Max Wedge headed block. Check head ID number to determine that or search on the 62 to 65 Mopar site for more additional information.

1965 426 Max Wedge block would in deed be rare.

The 2532230(-1) on the block casting indicates a first set of the core during manufacturing. They added a numeric value to the block casting for each re-set of the core during production runs.
Lots of guys look for early runs or "casting sets", hoping to get a block that has everything lined up better than a casting with lots of re-sets "high (-) numbers".

I thought once the Hemi came out in mid '64 that was the end of the Max Wedges. There shouldn't be any '65 Max Wedges.

1965 was the last year for Max Wedge engines. The street hemi didn't come out until 1966...the 1965 hemi was a high compression drag package only.

that's what I was thinking also... &/or they were just phasing out the 426 wedges & brining out the 440's

I believe there is no such animal as a 65 Max Wedge , only 426 street wedges were available,as far as a wedge head.

Yes, the street Hemis came out in '66, but the race Hemis were out in mid '64. The Max Wedges were race engines and were discontinued by '65 because of the race Hemis. the 426 street wedges continued through '65, though. I think the How Stuff Works article is incorrect on the years. I'm not professing to be an expert - this is just my understanding from the cumulative reading I've done over the years. I've never heard of a '65 Max Wedge - although we know that just about anything is possible with Ma Mopar!

Greg Lane provides pretty comprehensive information on the topic, too.

Really, 'How Stuff Works', now there's a real Mopar authority. When you have better evidence or a better place to get info, then make a worthwhile reply. My 1st car was a 63 330 that was an original MW,that I bought in 1971. I think I know a little bit about those cars.
