Looking to put somthing better then stock for a harmonic balancer on my 440.

Main problem is it's a late 72 casting block that came from a 73' Newport I am told. I have confirmed the date.

Looking at the stock appearing balancer which is rather thin and doesnt seem to have any noticeable bulges or lumps for weights it makes me think its a steel crank not cast.

The crank I ASSUME came from the block as it was cut .010 under. It doesnt have any strange vibrations but there are a good many random marks on the balancer with no numbers that makes it tough to use.

Any suggestions?

I'm pretty sure you can get a new stock replacement from Summit. The Pioneer brand comes to mind. Otherwise you can get the SFI approved Summit special. I have the latter on my 426W but haven't run it yet. However, the engine was balanced with it and nothing needed to be done to it.

Just wondering about the accuracy of the 40 year old part.

If the rubber looks good and it hasn't moved forward or backward off the main hub than it should be OK.

To check the accuracy of the TDC mark on it to the mark on the Ft. cover, you can use a piston stop or sometimes I'll just use a plastic tie in #1 cylinder, turning it over till it stops moving, and see approximately where the mark is. The piston stop is the most accurate way.

If its a 1 inch wide balancer, then you most likely have a steel crank. The cast crank balancers are more like 2 " wide or more.
