440 Build (Possibly Stupid Timing Question)

My buddy beside me at work is building a 350 sbc engine and I'm building a 440 for my charger. Having never built one, I just put my timing gears on dots lining up on TDC 1. He says on his after doing so he has to turn the crank one full revolution before dropping in the distributor. Is this accurate for the 440 as well? Or do I just drop it in? Thanks in advance.
 
you would not have to turn either motor to stab the distributor.the chev uses a one piece distrib and oil pump drive.big block dodge has two piece distrib and oil pump drive shaft.the distrib can be stabbed in any clocking as long as the rotor points at #1 wire when on top dead center on comp stroke.
 
Initial timing set-up, dot to dot, #1 TDC, and while there drop the dizzy drive gear in, lines in line with crank.
A little backup...you should preoil the motor, just before you fire it off the first time. That involves the drive gear being out, so the preoil shaft can be used.

Anyway...TDC...dot to dot...both #s 1 and 6 will be at TDC. Are the heads on, int manifold, valve covers? At least with valve covers off, you can watch the rocker arms, pushrods, etc.
You want to time the dizzy at #1 TDC compression stroke. Rotate by hand, watching the valve movement. Before TDC #1 intake will close, at TDC compression stroke both valves closed. After you find that, back the motor a little, and bring back up to around 10 degrees BEFORE TDC compression stroke. Then you can mount your dizzy.

If #1 is at TDC...and you move the crank back and forth a little, and you see BOTH valves opening and closing, it's at exhaust stroke. Your seeing valve overlap.

I know this can be a little confusing but install the cam and crank gear dot to dot. At this point #6 is ready to fire. if you rotate the crank 1 revolution the cam gear dot will be at 12 o clock because it turns at 1/2 the rotation of the crank. Now you are ready to fire at #1. As stated this can be verified by watching the valves and also putting your finger over the #1 spark plug hole and feeling the pressure as the piston comes up to TDC. If you have a timing set with multiple key ways just be aware which one you use as there are usually 3 positions(retarded,straight up, and advanced). Clear as mud? Good luck.
 
Or you could just drop the distributor in at #6 and forget the other crap. Turn the engine over almost 1 turns to proper timing, static time the distributor and lock it in place your done.
 
Just a technical question. I know how to time it and get her going, just wondering the main difference. Knowing mine is a two piece and his is one pretty much summed it up. Thanks though, Cannot wait to hear her sing. ahhhhhhhhhhhh Just need cylinder heads and i'm ready to go.
