My 440 idles rough and the RPM advance stumbles in the first 1000 RPM but is goo thereafter. Revs to 6000 smoothly and strong. Just the first bit that is wonky. The engine sat for a couple of years being started on and off.
Suggestions?

Sounds like it's fuel related, idle circuit and possibly accelerator pump. If it runs good at high RPM I would not suspect ignition.
Do you know what cam is in it? It may not idle well period.

I had similar problems off idle.
Did a couple of runs of adjustments on the idle screws using a vacuum gauge.
After that it runs a lot better, mine was way too rich at idle and when revving the accelerator pumps just made it worse.
Mine smelled really rich when running from the exhaust which might be an indication for you to find out.

Another trick to try if it is running rich(or lean), is by manually pushing the accelerator pump bracket a bit so it squirts in extra fuel, if the rpm increase it's running lean, if it stumbles but does not rev up slightly it's running rich and the extra fuel causes it to stumble a bit.
I got this advice from the forum and when trying it was very obvious to me mine was running rich.

Ghost, get the Holley Sniper EFI, that is if you figure you got carb issues.

Hmmm....now that you mention it, I don't. It has an Edelbrock Performer 440 intake and all of the dress up goodies everywhere. I think I will try to contact the OO and ask him what he put in it if anything. I mean, it's a Power Ram 4x4 and I got her up to 75 mph in less than 200 feet. It runs well off idle. Plus i'm going to spray some carb cleaner in it. It's a local truck and everyone has a story about how it hauls ***. It may have a lopey cam.

This motor is going in the Express this summer so I want to get it running right. It will be getting an M1 single plane and a bump stick to match if the one in it doesn't. And a 800 cfm Demon.

after many hours of reading all the blogs on the efis, I ordered a Sniper this a.m. to replace a FAST that wouldn't lean out, among other things. going on

Before I get too concerned I need to clean this carb and speak to the PO about the cam..

Ghost, carb cleaner on every blasted hole you can find. Maybe even remove mix screws & spray in there. Something probably just clogged up a bit.

Thanks, might swap out the plugs too.
