Good Evening all,
So couple of issues..... I am running a 1967 440. My oil presure never goes above 45. Is that what most of you are getting your 440's? If I get on it, it goes down to 20. If I really get on it, it will go down to 10, but then will jump right up to 40 when I come off it.

2nd issue... Tapping noise!!! running comp cam 23-712-9 and 8921 retro fit roller lifters.
I am running 20 50 oil. This happened beginning of last year, adjusted rockers and it went away.
Could it be they need to bew adjusted every year?

Thanks for any input,

Solid or Hyd if solid may be roller lifter issue.
What brand lifters?

Your oil pressure should go up with RPM just like your tachometer.
The standard rule for oil pressure is 10 pounds per 1000 rpm Minimum. If your oil pressure is going down as your engine RPM is
going up you have a problem. The pressure is bleeding off somewhere. When I start my car I have 70 psi and 30 psi when hot at idle.
As RPM goes up so does the oil pressure.

Thanks for the info.
Are you using high volume oil pump? If so, do you have stock oil pan 5qt?
I'm using a stock oil pump
Thanks

I'm wondering what type of gauge you are using to measure oil pressure. If you are relying on the dash stock gauge, you are just fooling yourself.

Regardless of that, lifters "tapping" is not a good sign.

I run a high volume in the engine. Its an aluminum block. The pan is 7qt.
A stock oil pump should be 20-30psi at idle and increase with rpm.
The formula is still the same regardless of stock or high volume pump 10psi per 1000 RPM.If you don't have that you will have engine failure.
The best way to check if you are using your factory gauge is to go to the parts store and buy a cheap mechanical oil pressure gauge and make sure that you are actually dropping pressure. If you are dropping pressure with the mechanical gauge then you have a problem with oil pressure bleeding off. Is this a rebuilt engine or something that you have been running for a little while?

Is the pick up at the right height off of the oil pan, sounds like it is losing its prime when accelerating ....just my .02..

Hi Joe,
Just got back home. Thanks for the info. I will do a little more investigating and will let you guys know what I find.

thanks,
DJ

That's what I was wondering. What about your dipstick, is it accurate? I'd fill the motor going off of the recommended capacity and double check the level.
Typically if your running low on oil you should see the gauge bouncing around too.

Shot in the dark....When you're accelerating your oil is flowing to the back of the pan. Getting away from the pickup?
