I am looking for a 440 for my 1971 Satellite. I found this local add and was wondering if $1000 is a good deal, assuming all is true. The owner claims the engine turns over and is complete from carb to oil pan. Thanks in advanced for any assistance.

"1972 440 engine, 906 shaved .45 heads, new HP cam & lifters & Springs, new high volume oil pump, new double roller timing chain.Aluminum high rise intake."

I would not buy a second hand long block and take the owners word for it, especially for $1,000 (with unknown mileage and condition). Carolina Machine Engines builds complete 440 long blocks for around $2,500 with 440HP. Everything they install is brand new, and one engine builder is in charge of the ENTIRE BUILD. They have a three (50,000 miles) to five year (100,000 miles) warranty for $150-$250 additional dollars. They also provide very cheap freight shipping, and pick your engine up-and-ship it back to your garage door. All you need is a long block core, which can easily be found for $600-$700. I purchased their 425HP version (which was more expensive at the time, same parts used on current 440HP version but had them install a .509 camshaft) and it cranked up first turn of the key. To show you how well it ran, after we broke the camshaft in, its first drive was to Daytona Beach which is around 90-120 miles away. Alternator and wiring were giving us charging issues, but the engine ran fantastic! They use real deep valve reliefs in their pistons, so no issues with going to larger cams in the future.

$1000 is a smok'n deal if you take the owners word for it.it would be a good deal for a non running eng with everything on it,assuming there is no block damage.its almost worth it to take the chance and hope you dont get burned.see if you can check the guy out through local contacts and google him as well.(just to see if anything pops up)
ask him if you can see under the timming cover to check for new parts.

Offer $600 see what happens for a complete motor I would pay $1000 if the deck stamp was 68-70

I got a complete carb to oil pan 78 truck motor with 45K and tranny for 600 on craigslist. Runs great once I got the truck stuff off and the car accessories on.

I am going to assume he means the heads were milled 0.045" and not 0.450". With that much milled from the heads, the HP cam (lift???) and the new Gee Whizz Wally Popup pistons that he installed, I am sure there are no bent valves. Why is he selling a supposedly new motor? Maybe I would offer $250 down, and say that after a machine shop, or yourself if you confident, checks it out, he will get the balance. Or, like Bigman said, offer $600. Smoking deals are usually smokin for a reason. Caveat Emptor, just sayin...

440

I have a 1975 440 complete except distributor and exhaust manifolds needs rebuilt $400.00

I have bought complete 440s for $250 to $500. I always tear them down and repair/rebuild them. I bought a complete assembled 400 with an alum intake for $250 about a year ago. He said it runs good, but I just want the spare parts/block. Don't be in a huirry, and watch C List for a good deal.

I would go crate motor.... and guarantee... a new motor sitting around can rust and get dirt in it and would need a tear down any way... crate motor and trans combo from reputable source. Sometimes people buy a motor and **** it up in the cam break in or some other thing on first start up.

I just bought a long block std bore 440 for $300 in NJ and see them all the time in the $400-600 range. Buying an engine blind is a risk. Expecting to toss it in and run it is a little crazy in my book, unless you know and trust the guy.

I picked up a fresh rebuilt 383 off Craigslist. Original owner had it rebuilt to stock at a reputable shop but then decided to get a crate motor. It sat for several years but had been stored right and had no miles on it. In the end he just wanted to get it out of his garage. It made 330 bhp on the engine dyno as is.. not bad. Its in the car now and runs great.

you can find good engines, just have to scour Craigslist. Its a risk though you will want to do as much inspection as you can. Take the valve covers off at minimum, bring a breaker bar and turn it over.
