440 R5?

Just picked up a super clean 77 440 block. It has stock bores with virtually no ridge. The serial number pad is blank and there is an “R5” cast into the front passenger side. Would this be an over the counter or warranty block?

Is there casting numbers on the side? Warranty should have a tag with a rivet and sometimes just the rivet remaining. It could be an over the counter service replacement block. I know my wedge race had cross bolted mains [4 bolt mains]. Not sure if that R5 for sure designated a race block. Could be a casting identifier. Either way it should be a nice block to build off of. Post some more pictures.

Did you actually read that thread? Not a race block... R5 Small Block is a race piece... R5 on a 440.... Not a race piece...

It's a 440, build your motor & don't overthink it....

Hmmm...I have a 5 R block....I doubt that it is special.

It is just a February 1974 casting.

Here is a weird one, look below the left head. I see a DPCD logo...wasn't that Dodge-Plymouth-Chrysler-DeSoto ?

I’m sure this block is nothing special. I was just curious of these numbers because I’ve never seen them before. Seeing that there was no serial or vin had me thinking it might be a warranty block or maybe an over the counter purchase

Have 2 440 blocks a 1976 and 1978 , they both have a R one side and a 9 on the other side .
