Fellas, need a little help here. Getting ready to start a 440 stroker build and have a couple questions to ask of you. This motor will be a combination street-strip car. (It will see the street more than the strip).

1) Would you go with Wiesco or Icon pistons? Found some for around 520.00 each set.

2) When doing a compression calculator what is the common deck clearance measurement to enter for a 440?

Any input would be appreciated and thanks in advance, Mike

The wiesco are good pistons and I would go with that.. What type of pistons are they? Flat top, dished, domed?

Flat top w/ valve reliefs . Shooting for around 10.5 compression so I can run pump gas. All my calculations tell me that I am ballpark with these pistons. I ran a search to find feedback on the Icons and could not find anything negative about them. Actually the feedback on the Icons were pretty good. There is not that much price difference so I thought I would put it out there to see what everyone on this site has to say... Appreciate the input, Mike

1) Wiesco and Icon will both work.

2) Check both piston's compression heights and determine how much you want to mill the block to get the deck height you want to run. Also refer to each piston's valve reliefs or dish/popup with the cylinder head combustion chamber size and deck height and cam timing to get your correct static & dynamic compression ratio for the fuel you wish to run.

It depends on what heads you plan to run also. I would shoot for a zero deck piston so you can use a .039 head gasket with a closed chamber head and get quench. I did that on my 440/493 as I used 440Source pistons and had to use a dished piston to keep my comp at 10.6 and I have good .046 quench as I use the 75cc Indy EZ heads. Mine runes fine on 92 pump and has no ping with 38 total timing. Ron

Also see what each piston weighs, all things equal, run the lighter one.

Wiseco's are proven by me. I am in the 13th year with my set.

Thanks to all that took the time to put their 2 cents in. It is a huge help to pick the brains of you guys that have been there and done that. For some one like me that is new to this your advise is priceless, specially when I am trying to stretch that almighty dollar as far as I can get it. Thanks again to all of you, Mike
