440 valve spring compressor tool?

Is there an affordable tool, manual, that will actually work on a 440 head?? I’ve tried 2 rentals at the auto store and they didn’t work.

Especially if you are breaking in a cam and require a spring change. I originally bought a C clamp style and it bent immediately. So I bought this one and haven't had any issues. Plus, the c clamp style won't work on a mounted head. The screw clamp style suck.
 
Agree.....I have tried or used 3 different "cheapies" and they take 3 times the time and a s___ pot full of cuss words. Get the Chrysler one from Summit or Mancini.

Sometimes you need to tap on the spring with a socket to help loosen the retainers before compressing.
 
Made this one up years ago for my Buick, you couldn't get anything else to work with the motor installed bc the brake booster and A/C box were in the way. After drilling a couple more holes I used it to change the springs on my 440 after break in.

I have one of these & it still needed modifications to work well, but does work. For mounted heads I used a K-D 2400 for many years, changing springs between rounds when needed.

Yep, I had to make a wire clip to hold the handle and that worked perfect. The C-clamp type valve spring compressor just bends. This one doesn't.

I suspect you need to figure out a way to hold the head down while you compress the spring.
 
I have one of the cheap head-on-engine types... they work okay but are kind of a pain so I welded a spare half-inch drive socket to the top of the handle. Now I just hook it on the valve spring, and turn it slowly with a cordless drill or whatever, it works sooo much nicer. Beanhead patent pending lol...

I’ve got on very similar to that one above, made by KD and it uses a 5/8 socket. Worked very well when I broke in the cam and had to install the second spring when it was broken in.
 
I have one of those cheaper C clamp SC and it too tries to lean over with the heavier springs but I've managed to work with it for a lot of years now. Figured I'd get a better compressor one of these days but there's not much going on with me anymore as far as engine work goes.....
