I recently acquired another 440 block. It is honed up nice and appears to be bored .020 over. My question is since the bore on this 440 is 4.34" and the bore of a stock 400 is 4.34" could I interchange these pistons or would they sit too far down in the hole?

Also do piston companies still make 0.020 over pistons I am having trouble finding any?

400 has a heavy low compression slug. Don't think it has the right height. I bought K/B in .020 over for one of my 440's.

The 400 pistons have a compression height of around 1.9" . if I remember right. The 440 piston has a C/H of approx. 2.07". Thats a difference of .170". So the piston would be close to .200 down in the hole. The only way they might possibly fit, would be with a longer rod. But if you have a 440 crank and a 400 block, put those together and build a 451! Then the piston C/H would be about 1.320". Then you will see the wrist pin up near the oil ring, ala small block chevy. Thats a better all around set up I believe.

Yeah it would suck. If you can still find that old 440 piston from I think it was NAPA, you can use the 440 piston in a 451 stroker. But not the 400 piston in a 440. Get the KB pistons for the 440. They are a nice piece.

you can get a kb184 piston in .020 over, i use them. the standard 400 bore is actually 4.342. there is a kb 400 piston that has a 1.902 pin height that can be used with a custom 440 stroker crank. i don't know if any of the trw/sealed power type forged 400 pistons are made anymore. they had a pin height of around 1.84(?). could be used in a stroker engine.

I am leaning toward the KB pistons in .020 over. I do have 30 over trw domes from the 80s in 30 over. Just be a shame to overbore if I don't have to.
