Hello all,

I am new to the site/forum. I’m an avid Mopar enthusiast and own two ‘69 Road Runners. Quick question. I just purchased the second car and it has an Open 741 axle which for obvious reasons I’d like to change. Is it possible to swap the 741 carrier and install the 489 Sure Grip Carrier using the balance of the axle? Or would I need to swap the entire axle assembly including the carrier? Thank you all very much in advance. This is a great site and I look forward to learning and collaborating more.

Sure grip will bolt right in, just swap the ring gear on to it and use the sure grip bearings, and put it back together.

If I understand the question, will the sure grip swap directly with open carrier. As 5.7 said, swap the ring gear on to the sure grip & use the bearing races from the sure grip and the original bearing caps (be sure to mark them to re-install on the correct side). If for some reason it is a "clutch type" limited slip, be sure to use the Mopar or Ford friction modifier with the gear lube.

Measure your gear backlash before disassembly and reset it to that measurement after installing the new suregrip and original ring gear. This will minimize the possibility of binding or howling once you get it back on the road.

And yes as mentioned the suregrip requires the friction modifier

The complete 489 carrier will bolt into your axle housing using all your original axles etc. If that is what you are asking.

agreed

The original posters question is a little confusing to me. But yes all 8.75 cases will bolt onto the axle housing.

There is a difference in some of the cases/years for the thrust button and also knowing if the bearings have been changed from Timkin to greens (removing the thrust button required).

Anywho, the OP should be a little clearer on the question and perhaps add some further detail on what his current set up is.

Thanks everyone for the replies! I’ll gather more detail around the 741 case that’s in the car. Again just bought it on Monday. I really appreciate all of the helpful advice!

741 is not case it's a carrier or pumpkin or center section
the side to side thing is a housing or a banjo housing

are Hotchkiss design the 8 1/4 is a Salisbury
scribe your driveshaft and yoke so you can get them back together the same way
use only genuine Dana/Spicer u joints or factory
