Anyone have any experience putting a 518 trans in a '69 b body? Im thinking of using one behind a 5.7 Hemi in a Coronet.

Will one of these fit without trans tunnel mods? What about the Trans cross member?

What is a good donor for one of these?

Any opinions on this link? http://www.transmissioncenter.net/SwapInformation.htm

Thanks,
Cevidicus

I have one and thought about using it but you will have to modify the tunnel from what I can see. The best one to use as I've been told by a Dodge dealer tranny guy is the non lock up version out of a one ton van or truck. The electrical connector will have two pins instead of three. Also there are internal mods to the OD oiling that should be done to make the tranny live longer.

There is also some conversation on this subject on the A Body site.
Seems to be getting more popular with the $4 gas...

Fuel milage is a key issue for me as anything less than 18-20 mpg just wont cut it. I really want more like 25mpg with 450 crank hp 5.7 and 3.23 or 3.55 rear gears. With the windows up and the a/c on at 70-75 mph... :D

My main concern is whether or not any surgery to the floor pan or torsion bar cross member involved on my B-Body. I know the A-Body requires quite a bit of modification.

Check out the pics in this link where they swap a 5.7 and a 518 into a Duster:

I have a 518 non-lockup I plan to install in my '69 Coronet 500.
From what I have been reading, the torsen bar crossmember needs to be cut to remove the center section for clearance. This was from an old Hot Rod article where they converted (I think) a GTX? The cut out center section gets re-connected by shaping something like 1/4" thick stap to the trans tunnel and re-welding it to the T-Bar crossmember. Then the lower crossmember that bolts on is also modified for the new transmission mount. The transmission mount is a universal GM type.
I doubt I'll get around to this till next year as I'm still building a 505" stroker for the Convertible.

i have pics of the tunnel mod but don't know how to post them

The article was on a 70GTX owned by the editor Karl Brauer in Car Craft, and Hotrod, I own the car now in OZ.
Art Carr did the conversion around 96.Most of the pix around are from his conversion back then. There are other kits around now though. The floor was modded for clearance. The factory shifter [and console] was used with min if any mods. The tailshaft is shortened, the trans mount was modded/lowered. There are also some rear axle wedges on the spring perches, to help with pinion angle and/or vibration -Karl had this done after the conversion.
The car used a MP A518, an adapter was made and a crank spacer. Looks like the orig dipstick to me. My car has the overdrive engaged via a toggle switch. Flick on for OD, flick off to engage 3rd. Its hidden just under the dash. Im pretty sure the orig speedo cable was used also. The GTX had a factory starter motor [I have since fitted a Denso mini starter and a TTI H pipe 2.5" mandrell exhaust kit w/stock HP manifolds and it also clears the gearbox OK.]
The GTX has rear 275/60s and with a factory 3.55 gear it felt laboured. I have only just fitted 3.91s but not really driven it much. I feel the extra rpm's will better suit the engine though.

I have the orig link from the magazine.[makes me cry to see the NM trans sitting in the trash!].....here you go

I am going to do this in my 70 Cuda and this is what I have found.

You need the 46RH tranny. not the electronic(46RE) out of a 2WD truck, as no cars came with this tranny and lockup is best, unless you plan to race.
PATC sells a complete kit to setup the kickdown and shifting into 4th.
Also, you need to shorten the driveshaft by 3.5".
Modify shift linkage and change to 3/8" tranny cooling lines.

Cool, thats the article I was referencing.
I also have the JVX adaptor to put the trans behind a big block, but decided to use a 360 i have for better gas mileage.
