Picked up a 63 Belvedere months back and keep reading about tapered axles in theses year cars... are the rear end just throw away ? or just the guts that suck..is the housing any good ? center section good ?

The issue folks have is the pain of removing the drums. You need a puller to get them off instead of the drum sliding off like the later ones. Another difference is the wheel bearing end play is set by shims behind the brake backing plate instead of a threaded adjuster like the later.

They are not weaker and use the same (741) centre as any other 8 3/4.

They can be modified so drums slide off.

Those rears also came with 742's!

Thanx 62 Dart Convertible! That's good info. I have three of these babies sitting around and I wasn't sure what to do with them. At least this shows me one option for the Savoy.

Thank you very much Sir ! you answered my Question :eusa_dance:

Now I'm wondering... is the housing the same as the 1965 cars ? so if narrow the housing could i put new axle's and all is good.... or Not ?

I just put a 65 B-body drum to drum rear in my 63 as I did not want to fool with the hub everytime I wanted to look at my brakes. Ron

Yeah, I should have said, as mine has a 3.23 SG 742

Glad to help mate.

No, you can't put later axles into a early housing nor vice versa. They are a package deal.
