Alright everyone. I can only see one way to route my shift cable and it rests right on the exhaust. Not good. Are there different length cables for the 8 and 6 cylinder cars? The park and speedo cables fit perfectly in the retainer of which there is none that I can see for the shift cable. Even if I try, I cannot get the shift cable to reach the retainer. Any thoughts?

Andrew

On mine, the park cable runs on top or over the exhaust. The shifter cable runs under and in front of the down pipe. The speedometer cable runs along the frame, not with the park cable. (Best pic I could get)

I'll post a picture of what I got tomorrow.

KKs shifter cable looks way longer than mine (it's not all about length, is it girls?) as his swings forward as far as the starter motor. Mine swings forwards only as far as an inch rearward of the engine pipe that turns near vertically down from the manifold flange.

KK, I think you may have the speedo cable and parkbrake cable mistaken for each other. I'm pretty sure the 2 cables through the rubber grommet are shift cable on top, speedo cable below.
(1000 Apologies if I'm talking out of my ***...)

I accept your apology, lol

Wish I had a better pic but you can see the two that come through the grommet together have a plastic shield or coating. Shifter cable going to the front of the trans, park going just behind. The speedometer cable dosent have any plastic coating and goes along the frame before heading to the rear of tranny. This car is unmolested for the exception of the starter and alternator. Top pic shows speed cable.

Looks like a different length cable to me...

Doh, you're spot on KK, sorry about that. I forgot trans has 2 cables, one for gear shift and one for park sprag.

No doubting your shift cable is longer.

I'd say yours is more correct as I can't verify the origins of my trans and cables - it is a 300H engine (and perhaps trans as well?).

Post a pic of your set up abloch...

I need a original parts book for this year car. Searching the net I've found two different lenth cables.

2266404 - is a 44" long cable (was advertised as a 318 engine application.)
2266403 - is a 42" long cable (no reference to engine, correct ends and year.)

Curiosity got the best of me so I measured mine. It measures 44". It also has yellow paint applied to the end at the shifter (factory known practice to identify whether it has been replaced or not). I'm thinking that a factory parts book would tell you what cable for what applications. Maybe exhaust downpipe might dictate cable lenth?

Well I am willing to bet I have the shorter cable. This was originally a /6 car that was converted by the PO. I can only assume that he did not get the longer cable and why would he. I didn't know either even though the last conversion I did was a 318 car and that cable came up short too. The other factor is the 3" dumps coming off the Max Wedge manifolds. Just too close so I wired it out of the way.

As long as it doesn't bind, or melts on the exhaust, I guess you're good :-/ The cable housing should hold up to heat even if some of the plastic coating melts off.

Going behind the down pipe doesn't look like a straight shot to where it mounts into the trans?

The two cables I saw on the net weren't what I call cheep either. (Flee-Bay)
