can i take my stock third member out and put in a posi unit? without any changes, like axles, ect....

If it's an ealier unit be sure you get the pins that go inside of the posi!Other wise you'll have too much axle end play! The later style limited slip uses axle adjuster.(68-70)

What carrier will you be using?

There is one problem that you will have to deal with depending on the carrier. If your original 1963 carrier is a 741 open (non-Sure Grip) unit and you replace it with a 742 Sure Grip unit, you will have to modify the original axles.

Axle 2070573 - 741 case w/o SG axle length 30 1/2"
Axle 2404050 - 742 case SG axle length 30 7/16"

The original axle is 1/16" to long. The axle can be maked and 1/16" carefully ground off on a bench grinder, taking your time about 45 minutes each axle. Reducing the length will then allow you to set the axle end play from .013" to .023".

I have made this swap myself and it worked well. I do not know if a modification has to be made when using a 741 case w/SG, or a 489 case w/SG.
