Hi folks, and Happy New Year!
My 63 Savoy has a direct drive starter. Is there anything later that will fit? This old feller doesn't want to crank very fast when it's cold, lol. Kind of like me.

Thank you, Wally.

Stick or automatic?

This may be a good time to pull that starter and go through it. Make sure the armature bushings are good and the armature is not dragging on the field windings, check the brushes, and just clean it up. Starters are pretty easy to work on. Don't forget to check the battery cables and grounds.

Thanks Mike. I went through it already, it's quite healthy inside actually, nothing rubbing, bushings and insulation still good.
So I'm guessing then, no updated starters for this old boy?

Not to my knowledge. Does the engine fire up normally? I learned to drive in my dads' 1960 Jeep PU. In the winter it would barely roll over a couple of times (due to driving 1 block to work no doubt) but it always fired right up!

I did not know about early Mopar/Canadian direct drive starters.

Found this info:
There is no parts store off-the-shelf starter that will directly replace the early-type \6 starter. If you want to run a mini starter, you'd either need to custom-build one or swap in a torque converter or flywheel (as applicable) with the later ring gear on it, then you can use the same mini starters you read about other people using, including the '91 318 item you bought.
