I want to swap the open 8 3/4, small pinion, '741, tapered axle casting differential , for a '489, SureGrip, 3:23 or 3:55 R&P...the whole rear end.. I'm led to believe that a 68-70 8 3/4 out of a BBody has the same spring perch width so the springs will be a direct bolt-up, and I'll lose only about an inch in the total width, which I should be able to compensate for with wheel offset.

Anyone done this swap, from junkyard , rebuilt or from one of the custom suppliers like Strange?

Thanks in advance.

I put a '68 GTX rear in my '64 Belvedere this past May. What you said is accurate. It was a piece of cake. One minor detail was that the axle vent block (where the brake lines T off) is in a slightly different location. It's a little farther down the tube, so the stock rubber brake line back there is too short. Not a big deal, though. '65 and '66 B body rearends would also work for you. '64 was the last year for the tapered axles.

I put the rear end from a '70 Road Runner in my '64 Belvedere (489 Sure Grip with 3.23 ratio). As 64BEL noted, you'll have to purchase a longer rear rubber brake line, which should be available at your local parts stores.

Thanks very much for your input. Sincerely appreciated.
