Does anyone know if you have to cut the hood braces to run a factory cross ram and factory style repop air cleaners on a 64 plymouth? I don't want a hood scoop and really don't wanna cut the braces but will if I have too. Thanks in advance

Well I believe the factory did cut them. I run the Max Wedge scoop on my 63 but I run a single Holley carb and have a glass hood. Ron

Thanks Ron. If you don't mind me asking, where did you get your hood and we're you happy with the quality?

I had to cut them on my buddy's 64. stock intake and 3705 carbs, repop air cleaner assys.

ran the same thing on my 63 ply savoy, one air cleaner rubbed, got a different hood and cut the braces and put the scoop on. 63 Max Wedge 001.jpg

The braces on my 64 with the MW was cut from the factory!

I like the hood but I bought it used from a friend and dont know what brand it is. Sorry I cant help you. Now my brother bought a hood for his 64 Fury from AAR (now called Stinger) in Flordia and had it at his door in 12 days. He is happy with it. Ron

Hi guys,

I saw this thread and wanted to ask a question of you fellas who 'have been there' just so I'm clear..... So I'm restoring a '64 Polara convertible that was originally a 318/automatic car and I've got the original hood that has the support braces intact. I'm going to build a '67 440 HP block I have to look (externally) like a MW motor. I'm going with the crossram intake from A&A, a pair of 3705 carbs, the original looking (but aftermarket) dual black air cleaners, and the MW style exhaust manifolds and dual exhaust. But I don't intend on putting a hood scoop of any kind on the car.

My question is.....Will those black air cleaners sit so high that I'll have to cut my hood braces (as shown in Ply64post top pic) just to be able to close my hood? I read Dvw's post about having to cut his buddies hood on his '64 with the same setup I'm building, but I wasn't sure if his car was a Plymouth or a Dodge.

Thanks!

I ran my 63 Fury with the factory crossram, Edelbrock carbs and the aftermarket, stock appearing 13" air filters. I installed a torque strap to stop the motor from rocking because the clearance between the front of the driver's side air cleaner and the hood brace was about 1/4".
Recently I decided to add 1" spacers under the carbs to deal with the current crappy gas percolation issues, so cut the hood braces and added a later hemi scoop.

Sweet looking 63 SF conv. there Dave!

I agree! VERY nice looking droptop, Dave.

And unless there's a big difference between Plymouth & Dodge and the way those 426/440 motors sit in the engine bay, it sounds like I should play it safe and cut my hood supports too. A 1/4" of clearance leaving them in isn't enough for me....

I have pics of a 63 Dodge in some of my books and even with the flat hood and no scoop the braces are cut out. Sounds like it would be a good idea. Ron

It's a 64 Plymouth convertible.
