While the unibody is on the Rotissary for upgrades and repairs I have been making a list of needed suspension and drive train parts. The original drivetrain was a Poly 318, 727 trans and the 8 1/4" taper axle rear end with sure grip. The track flange to flange is 60-61". The local MoPar guys say to go with the 8 3/4" or Dana.
I'll have 400 to 500 HP and this car will be show and cruise more than race.
Q: Is the smaller rear end too weak for this application?
Q: Is the 8 3/4" track in the 60"- 61" range ?

I'll be watching this as I've got the exact same predicament. I've been wondering if an 8 3/4 will be able to withstand 500 horsepower or if a Dana is in order.

Uh guys, remember that 8 3/4's lived behind Hemi's back in the day, so I think they will live behind what your planning on. I may be wrong on this, but I think the Dana was not available untill 68, someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

5.7 is correct. The 68 SS Dart came equiped with an 8.75 when coupled with an auto. When a 4 speed was used they placed a Dana out back. The 8.75 should do your job BUT myself i would fill it with after market stuff. JMO.

I had a '64 Belvedere Max Wedge car and I installed a 8 3/4 SG from a '70 RR. It fit right in and gave me more fender clearance for wider rear tires. Any '65 - '70 B body rear end should bolt right in to a '64 Polara.

Also your current rear should already be a 8 3/4, not a 8 1/4. If you want to get rid of the tapered axels, find a 65 rear housing. S0me one might shed light on housing measurements from backing plate mounting to backing plate mounting of other years also. spring to spring ect.

Spring pads on all B-body 8/34s are the same width, use a 65 housing! it is the narrowest of all b-bodies apx.52" flange to flange.Give Dennis a call @ OVC Indust.Inc.(515-282-9996) He can fix you up with all your rearend needs! Tell him Steve with the N/SS racers said to call.He actually supplies all most all of the aftermarket guys with their parts.

the dimensions you need are drum to drum as follows

1962-63 58 1/2" also 64 max wedge
1964 60 7/8"
1965-67 59 1/2"
1968-70 60 1/8"

as you can see any of the 65 and up without the tapered axels would fit you car.

All the way !

Here is a view of it done all the way just for reference.. Strange S60 (Dana) Chassisworks Prolink Setup and a mini tub.. I thought it over for a long time and then said what the heck and made it bulletproof !!!

What is the "perch" measurements?

I remember placing a '70 cuda (E body) dana 60 rear in my '64 polara. Bolted right up, even swapped out the e-brake cables to the dana's backing plates. Only thing was having to make up a drive shaft (back half of the dana's to the front half of the '64's)

I havn't checked out my '62 yet on what will fit?

44 inch on center.

Center of the perch to the center of the other perch, 44 inch on center. Or put in the leaf springs, slide the axle under the car and loosely bolt things up and measure the distance from one backing plate to the leaf spring and make sure the other side is the same then measure the distance between the perches and you'll be at 44 inches on center. Hope this helps.

Cool
Is that the same measurement for '63 '64 '65 "B" bodies? Any others like certain year "E" bodies would happen to be the same?

All b bodies to 70 and I'm prettty sure the e bodies as well. The a bodies, well I'm a bit foggy on them.
