Can anyone tell me if the 1.5" wide side trim should be painted down the middle? There are just as many web pics showing painted trim as showing not painted.

If it should be painted, what would be an appropriate paint to use on the chrome? Does the color of the painted trim depend on the color of the car??

Not my pics and not my car- just added as examples of the trim I'm questioning.

Thanks all.

When I bought mine they were painted white from the factory and so was the car. I kinda like the look of no paint though.

My 64 is a Polara with red body, white roof, and black interior,.....side molding center is painted black....looks like color is keyed to interior....I've seen Polara 500's with engine turned finish on side trim...Hope this helps..

If its a 500 then the center is engine turned sticker and Joe Suchy has the kit, he's a vendor on the forum.

DSC05348.jpgI thouight the color is indicated on the fender tag, but I could be wrong, here's a 500

It has been 40 years since I had my Polara, but as I remember, it was a machined looking center section. Hard to see in the old scanned picture.

Im thinkn ? 500 were engine-turn & the others were black., from what iv seen . On the 65 coro 440's insert of side mlds. Were matched 2 interoir color ., i def. Like the look of no color.. Should b sumwhat e.z. Be'n stainless., hope i was of some help

Thanks for all the replies. Sounds like we've conclusively determined that the wide side moulding was painted from the factory. Polara 500s had machine-turned trim while regular Polaras had painted trim.

I'd like to know what determined what color the trim was painted (was it a special order? dealer-applied tape?). My white Polara does have tiny specs of white in the trim recess, which seems odd to me that a white car would have the trim painted white. I think more observations of known original cars is in order :)

Mine 64 is painted white and the inside the trim is white also. Personally I have only ever seen white & black (swirl polished on 500 models) inside the trim. My interior in turquoise / light blue ... I can't imagine using that color for the inside of the exterior trim.

Also it is not an applied tape ... it is factory painted.

The engine turned swirl, are you saying its not a sticker? If so, I call BS!

My bad, I misunderstood/read the post wrong.

Polara 500 trim

I have never seen a Polara 500 that the trim on the side was now swirls. I have owned 2 and both were like that and never painted.

the trim is an inserted time piece, it is glued on.
