I pulled the water pump off of my 65 Belvedere because one of the pulley bolt hole threads is messed up and I had another water pump sitting on the shelf. Which water pump is correct for 65?
2848290 or 3671083.

3671083 is the one I pulled off and has the messed up bolt hole threads. The water pump housing is correct I think.

Is one of these better at cooling than the other?

Can I just cleanup the bolt hole or send it off to be refurbished? I know I can get a new replacement but want to stick with original if I can.

3671083 Is a newer pump. Most likely made in the mid 70's. The 2848290 is most likely more period correct for your car.

That number (2848290) is later than 65 also. Probably been replaced over the years. Keep looking. They are out there. Housing looks like a proper number, just guessing.

Go int the IPB and you can get the right number. Mymopar has them to download.

My rule of thumb when reading Mopar part #'s: first #; 2 = 1960's; 3 = 1970's
second #; 8 = aproxiamate year of manufacture (+/- one year)
For your water pump, you would want something starting 24..... , or 25.....

Well lookee there... the Hemi uses an A/C pump....

On non-Hemi big blocks, the water pump pullies are different diameters between A/C and non-A/C, so the impeller runs at different speeds. A/C water pump has less vanes, to pump equivalent volume of water at higher shaft speed, as regular pump with larger pulley. Putting an A/C water pump on a non-A/C car with a larger diameter pump pulley would reduce the volume of coolant being moved through the radiator, and could cause cooling problems.

Yes, but it's the year that the casting or part number was designed for. So (for instance) if that casting was first used in a 62 model then the number would start with a 22. But it would probably be used for many years before a design change was necessary.
