HI CAN ANYONE TELL ME IF YOU CAN INSTALL A NEW SENDING UNIT IN A 66 PLYMOUTH BELVERDERE ll WITH OUT removing FUEL TANK IT LOOKS LIKE YOU CAN ANYONE DONE IT? THANKS MIKE
Thanks guys for the info it looked like it could be done but I thought I ask the Pro's A883wing I looked at your cars very nice!!! thanks to all Mike:blob1:
Concur with the 1/4 tank or less..... I thought I had aprox. 1/4 in my daughter 68' Ply. when I removed it, needless to say - it wasn't; I got soaked..... Not fun
The original units are MUCH better than the repos and can usually be repaired.
Before you buy a new one (or if you already have) carefully remove your old one and clean it, check the float for leaks and BEFORE you even remove it check the ground and the connections on the sender at the outside of the tank.
WHY?
Because the repo sending units are notorious for not working and even when they do work I have never heard of one being accurate. Sometimes you can experiment with bending the rod on the float to get it closer to being accurate but it is a PITA experiment of running the car out of gas, pulling it back out and bending based on how much you have changed it the 1st or 2nd time. You also run the risk of breaking it doing this.
I just went through takin out a fuel tank and removing all the old gas and 40+ year old debris from the neck (filler tube) up and to the Edelbrock 600 I have on my 66 Coronet.
Not sure if you're in that deep.
It can be done. Just do as the others mentioned: 1/4 tank or less.
I had my Coronet's rear end up on jack stands to make it a little easier on myself to do the work.
I'm about to do this on my 69 Coronet, fitting a new tank also as the existing one is rusted and leaking and I notice the new tanks do not have a fuel filler neck. The old one appears to be firmly attached, no twisting this off by the looks of it, so how is the filler neck transplanted across to a new tank?
