I purchased this gem off an older gentleman in north GA about four years ago. It took me several phone calls just get the guy to agree to meet with me as he was very protective of his inventory and shop locations. He had 88 cars with 33 of them being in showroom condition. His cars were immaculate. Some of the best I have ever seen from Mopar to F's to other brands. But overall he was a Mopar lover. After interviewing me and showing me some rather interesting cars that were in pretty rough shape. Eventually after several hours of answering questions correctly (he often reminded me he was a car collector not a car dealer) and refusing to look at mustangs, camaros, chevelles, etc he showed me a car I fell in love with the second I came around the corner. I saw her rear end and my wallet just opened up. :love4: Then he popped the hood and showed me the 340 just sitting in there. And we got her fired up and I listened to the lobe and watched the steering wheel shake. I knew I couldn't let this car go.
The guy didn't know what had been done to it as the previous owner dumped it pretty quick. I didn't really have much info other then that he was terrible at wiring. lol.
Well about three days later the guy dropped the car and I rolled it into the garage. After putting a new fuel pump and shorting it out with a screwdriver to get it fired up again I let it run a bit with my dad listening just to get an idea of what was going on with it. It sounded pretty decent. After that I took the intake and valve covers off. From the look of things there was an aftermarket cam installed (if anybody can help http://www.forbbodiesonly.com/moparforum/showthread.php?62746-help-with-cam-identification ). The inside of the motor looks very clean, I'm pretty sure the motor has not been ran down the road since the upgrades. It also got roller rockers. Not sure what else, as thats pretty much the extent of my knowledge of cars.
I'm pretty sure it has the original tranny, the original motor was a 318 according to the VIN search I did. As far as I can tell there is no body damage to this car, the magnet stuck every where I put it. There has been a patch put in the drivers side floor. And the seats have been reupholstered.
I did get a few extra parts, two 500 grills, two sets of headlight surrounds, and as far as I can tell all the trim is there. With all the glass.
I brought the car out to Texas a few months back and am just not getting around to working on it.

so what are these? (new to cars)

Great car, man. Love that body style. Those are the stock stamped steel rockers. Not exactly a race piece, but certainly good enough for a driver. What are your plans for the car?

Thanks.
Right now I just want a driver. Freshing up the brakes, wireing harness, get all the lights working, and get the motor going with a new intake and carb.
Eventually after I get a feel for thr car it will be tearing it down n blasting it. Paint, disc brakes all around, serpentine conversion, new wheels, 4 or 5 speed tranny, etc
I would like to squeeze as few more ponies out of this motor too. I'm not sure if 500 hp (motor not to the wheels) is realistic or not; naturally aspirated and pump gas.

Getting 500 neddies out of anything naturally aspirated is big work! ;)

I have had a few 340's, and they are up to the task, but it depends on what you put in when you rebuild it. Don't expect 500 HP from purely bolt on externals.

Love the car, although, I might be a little biased! ;)

What all did you do to it?

No replacement for displacement....Go big or go home. Easier to make 500+ ponies with a ratio of 1.2 horsepower per cubic inch, just saying. Your motor with this ratio would make around 410 ponies at the flywheel. This figure can be reached with modest bolt on performance upgrades; aluminum intake, camshaft, headers, ignition, and fuel management.

I would like to have a big motor but I love the 340. I'm a motorcycle guy and love high reving engines. Plus I like having the lighter weight engine. So if bolt ons can get me to 410, how to I get the other 90?

Stroke that 340 with a 3.79 or 4.0 crank. 3.79 stroke crank in a 340 will make 396 or 4.0 stroke will make 418. The 418+ stroker would make 501hp with the 1.2 formula. I know the parts that are available for the LA motors a 400+ cube LA stroker should easily make that goal with the right parts.

What all did you do to it?

If your 340 is solid on the bottom end, I would leave it stock, maybe Ported and polished W2 heads (I have always liked them). Probably a solid cam, Purple [email protected]? Big carb, 1050 or something similar. Exhaust is critical as an 500HP engine is going to have to rev. That cam I mentioned would be in the 3400 to 7200 range.

Looks like you took a pic of the heads that have 340 on them? Verify that the block is a 340 too. I've seen 340 heads on teens before.....

If it were me I'd save the 340 and pick up a 360, there are allot more parts readily available (426 stroker kits) and you will be further ahead with the added cubes. Just my 2 cents

it has a cam. i'm just not sure which one. if the stamps H2 and 17 mean anything i would be stoked.

i'll keep that in mind. like i said i'm just trying to get a driver (and a better idea about this whole car/motor thing) right now. i have so much to learn its crazy.

Well you got a good start just by buying a Mopar "great drivetrains". Forgot to mention "awesome car, one of my favorites".

brake job - kind of

It finally got to the point where I could get my coronet to the same city as I was living for the first time pretty much since I purchased it.
Only thing is I am limited in help in the off loading department where I currently live.
Before starting the job I could just picture my wife behind the wheel screaming, while pushing the brake pedal to the floor, as the car careened down our sloped driveway, through the garage and into the house while mangling our furnace, water heater and bathroom. After playing this in my mind several times and having a good laugh I decided I better at least get some sort of brakes on this car. The alternative would have been to fix the house and then get punched me in the face while I slept. I'll take the former thank you. I say to myself "self, you've done several brake jobs (all disc mind you) this will be a walk in the park." Little did I know that a 45 year old car with OEM brakes and all the rust one could enjoy wouldn't be the three hour project I had set out to conquer.
Anyways;
I started to fill the system from the back right with my handy new Mityvac (thank you to the recommendations of several people on this site). I made it the front right when I found this:20131128_091147.jpg
I called my dad and explained there was a bleeder screw broke off in "the round thing the brake line runs to" he told me it was a wheel cylinder. I went ahead and purchased two new cylinders because I figured it was easier and better then trying to easy-out the old bleeder. Not to mention the rubbers weren't in the best shape. After I got it home I googled how to remove a drum after pulling on the whole assembly and getting nowhere. Turns out the drum and the shoes don't come out as one piece. Let me know if y'all need the link for that. LOL. Then this happens:20131128_110253.jpg
Back to the parts store I go for some new brake lines free from dry rot. After several hours spread over two day she's good to go: 20131129_113114.jpg
Then out of the the old wood shop and onto the trailer for the three hour trek home:

Progress!!

did a little work on the body today. pretty exciting to me as this is the first major step since i bought the car over 4 years ago!
this is a great alternative to the 3M product. still wears quickly though. took two just to do a quarter panel plus a wire cone.

More inventory/condition check

Well gentleman, the fundage is low again so i figured I would at least get a better idea of where I am at. The more I dig through this car the better I think the price was. At least thats what I keep telling myself. lol

Excited to see the condition of this thing. Took about 2 minutes of light sanding to see this shine.

Any way to fix this mirror?
DSC01179.jpg

Here are a few floor patches. Plus the whole floor has that nasty cheap rubber spray on it.

I am a little worried about it from underneath though. Guessing I need a new floor pan.

DSC01206.jpg

In perfect condition. However the drivers side one does a a broken tab on the right side.
DSC01166.jpg

I'm going to have to find the bracket for this. Anyone have one?
DSC01162.jpg

Is this wheel a lost cause? I like it and want to rewrap it but this crack looks serious.
DSC01210.jpg

Looks like you have plenty to keep you working for a while coronet340. I'd say that wheel has come and gone. Take one heck of a talented fella to bring that back. As far as the mirror, bad news there as well...the silver is delaminating from the glass of the mirror. No way to really fix that unless you stripped off all the old and re-mirrored the finish. Floors aren't too bad to change.....just a bit of dirty work. Just to give you a heads up, your console shifter is missing the back up switch. You won't have reverse lights without it. It mounts to the side of the shifting mechanism and looks like this:

Keep up the good work!
