We rewired the alternator circuit today on my 67 belvedere, after we noticed a fried wire, bypassed the amp meter , and got everything back together, now the car will start briefly when we turn the ignition to start but dies when the key goes to the run position.

Thanks!

Sounds like you fried your ballast resistor, I bet if you replace it the car will keep running once it starts.

Thanks that makes sense, the other problem we have is now the wire going between the field on the Alternator and the voltage regulator, that is hooked up to keyed power fried, could this be because of the Ballast resistor too or maybe why the ballast resistor went bad? Could we have a bad ignition switch?

Sounds like a short straight to ground. Double check all your wiring from the ignition switch out.

I would start at the ballast with a test light and work my way to the ignition switch.

Thanks! I think we found the problem, the P/O had taken out the insulator for one of the field terminals, as its a later alternator. When I changed over to the new voltage regulator, I hooked up the other field terminal and it must be grounding out. Thanks for all the help.
