Hi,

Does anyone have any links for a checklist that covers any and all items that have to be changed to go from a 318 /auto727 '741' rear to 440/auto 727 '489' rear with 3:23 gears in a 1967 belvedere gtx clone..

Is the kickdown linkage different?
Can i use existing driveshaft?
Should 3/8 fuel line be used?

Thanks for any help...

well... you do not need a 3/8" fuel line but it is an upgrade that will not hurt performance. fuel line size is based upon the engine's characteristics in regards to moving away from OE specs, not necessarily the size of the engine.

I can only presume that the kickdown linkage is different because it is different for all SB and BB's in b-bodies.

The driveshaft you can use but you will need to get it shortened and balanced. you will need to get it cut exactly 4 1/8" shorter.

Lastly you will need different motor mounts, a longer wire to your ignition coil (SB is near firewall, BB is in front of engine), a different radiator (to ensure proper cooling, or you could try your's and see if it works okay), and you may have to look at getting a different exhaust system due to the dumps being located in different locations (albeit you are not running headers).

Hope this helps.

Thanks SO much racedodge, this is the type of info I was hoping for.... Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge... Any and all other tips, tricks, links would be greatly appreciated...

I've done that conversion and the driveshaft did not need to be shortened. You may need a different yolk on either the rear end or the driveshaft to change to the '489. Kickdown linkage is different and the inlet and outlets on the small block radiator are in the wrong locations.

Thanks for the good information, please keep it coming..as an aside, would anyone have a set of 440/727 kick down linkage for sale? please PM me if you do...

not just any 440/727 kickdown linkage will work, C Bodies are different than B Bodies, so make sure you get a B Body set that is from around your year... I am saying this because I do not know the distance from your firewall to your engine and if it is different than others (i.e. closer together) then you will have issues with it engaging the throttle pressure valve (i.e. kickdown) appropriately.

oh my bad! lol I thought he had a 904 behind his 318, forgive me clemul and good catch 1966satellite.

now if you DID have a 904 you would need to shorten the driveshaft :glasses9:

depends on what year of 440 he is getting.. if he gets a 73 up, then he would be okay as the 73+ BB housings dumped on the passenger side. The outlet on the w/p housing can be remedied by just getting a straight tipped thermostat housing. good points though!
