67 Charger Rotating Headlight Motors

Hey Guys...I am far enough along with my restoration of my 67 Charger I connected the wiring to the headlight motors and when turning the lights on "nothing happens" and I cannot hear any noise at all from the relays. Where do I start troubleshooting the system? I know the limit switches are working and checked them before re-installing. When I bought the car the headlight motors were disconnected which leads me to beleve they were non fuctional. Do I start with the control relay looking for specific voltages? Any advice would be appreciated.

do you have a service manual? There are 2 pages of troubleshooting tips in there on this system....

You can jump the motors with a jumper wire at the grille to see if the motors are good or not...you must disconnect the motors from the front harness to do this

I have new relay sets here if needed

A383Wing.....I do have the service manual and printed the tech pages. I followed the tips on checking specific items....ground, circuit breaker, voltage to the relays and voltage at the motors. I have voltage to the relays but no voltage at the motors, so is this a suspect of the relays being very old and non working? The headlight closed light works correctly so I must believe the limit switches are working correctly. So, if the relays are non working you have said you have them for sale. Would you please advise how to purchase.

A383Wing.....I had the motors rebuilt and they work great. I replaced and installed the new relays. Initially the headlights would only open when the lights were turned on...and then all of a sudden they started working both ways...open and close. So, now they are back to only open when the lights are turned on. They do not close. The HOLD open switch is in the off position. What would you suggest I look at to maybe identify what is not happening?

I have many limit switches, do u need those with bullet style ends or the spade style ? all are original, mounting frames rusty on surface, but all switches are testing good.....let me know thanks Ken

dragrazor.....I would need the bullet style ends. The limit switch is for the lower right for the passenger side headlamp. Please let me know if you have this one and the cost if it is for sale.....thank you

I will check in the morning, am sure I will have..........will take pics etc and describe accurately. Of all those I have tested they seem to be bad more often ? have at least half a dozen that are bad, but the spade style are ok ????? have u heard that from others ?

Also I see u had motors rebuilt, I have 4+ that are good, Do you know if your rebuilder would know the amps required for a "GOOD" motor to draw while functioning ? Would like to test mine for more than just operation, believe amp draw would tell the condition thanks Ken

Ken....I will give the guy a call tomorrow morning to see if he will let me have that information. I have not heard any complaints on the limit switches. Were you able to find a lower right switch?

It's now quite some time since I was working on the headlight motors but I seem to remember you may see up towards 8 Amps each. Slow turning motor will pull more amps than a faster one so keep things lubricated and nice to minimize current.

Those that I have all turn at same speed loaded with headlight assemblies or w/o , some are a little nosier but got quiet after several revolutions. thanks, other concern is I am supplying 12 volts thru about 10" of 14ga wire vs thru the assembled wiring. Sure hope I know by mid summer, will mean is closer to being completed

Yes, do have the switches, will get pics and give an exact appearance description, battery was dead on camera and will not be back to shop till Saturday, so check on here Saturday

Ken....I talked to the guy who rebuilt 4 motors for me...1 could not be rebuilt as it had been taken apart before and was missing parts. Guys name is Scott and he advised the motor should not draw more than 10 amps under load. He also stated if the motor is working correctly both under load or without load it should be a worthy motor to use. One of the motors he rebuilt does run or turn slower than the other two, so I called and asked was there a specific reason. Curious comment from Scott is he has seen different gears in motors which may be part of the slower turning motor, which one of mine had.

oh, great thanks for the info, had another Mopar man on here till me he thought 8amps was abt right so sounds good. Will get the pics posted in AM
