67 coronet 4bbl 273 help locate where to put water sending unit for temp gauge

I have a factory 273 v8 in my coronet, with cast 4 bbl intake, shortie headers. I can not find a good location for the aftermarket procomp temp gauge I want to install.... there is only one spot in the intake and it has a small hole for just the idiot light. anyone have any good ideas? locations? my shortie headers on side make it difficult for any side of block locations....help anyone? pics? etc...

Does you're radiator have a bung on the pass side like my '67 coronet 318?

You could try a bung on the water pump but there usually frozen and come out with a drill and pipe tap
 
I doubt it, but I can look. its an aftermarket aluminum one...
not my choice, bought it this way.
 
Maybe the petcock....

You could use a brass adapter off the block drain plug

I have a weiand intake with a bunch of places.... or weld a piece of 2"pipe with a bung placed in upper radiator hose
 
what I did on my 273 was to "t" off the water hose coming out of intake going to heater core....used brass fittings and put the sender bulb in the one end of "T" and other end of "T" goes to heater core...

or you can adapt one end of the "T" to the intake, and the bottom of the "T" goes to heater core, and other end of "T" for sender. You will only need to buy 2 fitting to make it all work.
 
do you have a picture of what that looks like a383wing?
here is a pic of my radiator...I have two places on it that are plugged...would this work? how accurate would it be compared to the block water temp? etc... what you think?

not a good idea? or is the inline auto meter fitting in top radiator hose better?

If the threads on the radiator plug the same as the sensor you're golden.... or you need an adapter but this is where a temp sender goes...
More accurate because it will allow the engine to warm up before the thermostat opens and warms the radiator then it controls the temp switches... on the block it warms up before the radiator does and the fan will come on and make the engine slower to come to temp and delay the thermostat... you won't notice it either way but that's the reasoning
 
sender bulb needs to go into the coolant before the thermostat..not after

I don't have a picture, but you only need to buy 2 brass fittings to adapt the sender to the heater hose connection
 
ok little confused then...are you two having opposite ideas? or the same? lol...
so my options seem to be this:
1. put sendor in the plug in top of radiator as shown in last pic
2. put a auto meter adapter fitting from summit racing inline of my top radiator hose.
3. put a inline fitting in my heater hose going to the heater core from engine...

will all three of these read with same accuracy?
one location better than the other?
I just want to make sure where ever I put it, its gonna tell me when my car is overheating...etc....
 
if you put sender in top of radiator, it will not read any temp until thermostat opens up...same goes for putting sender in upper rad hose...

so, with that being said, what happens if t-stat sticks closed? Engine will overheat and you will not know it because temp sender bulb is still in cold water in radiator. Plus, the water up there will not be accurate temp as engine is.

put a "T" fitting in your hose from intake to heater core..that will be yer most accurate temp reading. Keep it as close to the outgoing nipple as possible
