HI all,

Got a strange problem. I cannot lock the doors on my new (to me) 67 Coronet. Scenarios:

1- Press the door locks from within the car, door is still able to be opened by someone using the outside door handle. Press the button, door lock pops up and door open.

2- Using key, turn towards rear of car, lock knob goes down (not fully down though) door can be opened by pressing the outside door button. Door lock pops up again and door opens.

What is causing this do you think?

Seems to me that the key cannot fully lower the door locks. Has anyone had this problem before? I need help on this as I cannot leave my car anywhere like this.

hi,

When I installed new door handles it did the same thing, so I had to pop the door panel off and play with the rod that goes from the door lock to the handle, something would not let the rod go all the way down , even though from the outside it felt ok. Good luck

Any tips for taking the door linings off? I don't want to break anything.

get a trim removal tool from harbor freight. Cheap and will help you not to rip the clips out of the panel itself. the clips are metal so theyre pretty tough. the panel on the other hand is compressed partical board so it is not.

Its pretty easy, take your time and go clip by clip.

As for the locks I bet you need to do some adjusting. Mine work now but they do not allow you to lock the door and then close it. You have to lock the door from the outside with it closed or they pop open like you mentioned. But once I lock them with the key from the outside they stay locked.

best of luck and let us know what you find.

HI guys..

I know the problem.

The previous owner must have changed the door handles, as they look brand new...But, they forgot to put back the linkage or rod that connects the key barrel to the lock mechanism..

So looks like I am up for a new lock system. My chances of finding just the linkage here in Finland where I live is going to be slim and none.

BTW, I got the door liners off easy. And they went back on easy too. So at least I learned how to do that correctly.

Anyone know where I can order those linkages or the complete barrel assembly for both doors? Need a place that will ship to me of course.

TekHouse,

Any part can be found sir, the US Ebay site is one of the best, but there are several salvage yards out there too that will ship anywhere in the world. I'll start doing some sniffing too, and look through my shop manuals.

Um, I would think that if parts were missing, they wouldn't work at all.

Are you sure?

If you exhaust all other options send me a PM as I have a set of lock rods. I was planning on holding on to these for a bit until my car was completely done in case something happened. Also I have no idea how to ship something to finland.

I have this problem too, here's the zero dollar and zero work fix. When I get out of the car I manually push the door lock down when the door is open. Then I hold my thumb down on the door handle release button while shutting the door. Viola, door is locked. This somehow keeps the door lock from popping up open, give it a try.

Hey! I noticed that too..

Only one problem..How does the door unlock then? If I do not have those linkages..I cannot see how this will allow the door to ever unlock again? Or am I missing something..?

@kb67mopar, I think I have found them from ebay. I messaged them and am waiting for a message back. For the record shipping to Finland is easy via US Post..

So..if you have a spare '68 Charger R/T 440, pop it in a box and send it over..I would really appreciate it! ;)

Have you been inside the door to verify parts are missing?

if the rod to the lock button is missing, the button will come off.

If the rod from the inside handle is missing, the lock will still work with the key.

Some cars operate with what I call an "anti-stupidity" device, as described by 66coronerdeluxe, making it difficult to lock your keys in the car.

Some operate with an "anti-idiocy" device, requiring you to use the key to lock and unlock the door from the outside, absolutely 100% preventing you from locking the keys in the car.

Yep no linkage..both doors.

Key moves the lock tumbler and the tag is connected to...AIR.
:(

Rod from tumbler to latch?

OK. so it's a "placebo" locking effect...

NO rod from tumbler..just the tumbler..then air..then the lock mechanism that is operated by the push button inside the car. So my keys are largely redundant. :)
