Good Day all , need some input and advice , I have a 1967 coronet conv. just rebuilt 383(cam broken in and first oilchange) 9.8-1comp, holley 670cfm vac sec. dual plane alum. int. tf727 , since the rebuild (and saginaw steering pump pressure reduction) when running on jack stands the steering wheel rotates right to the steering stop (slowly but steady) on the first 10 min. drive if you let go of the wheel it heads for the ditch right away , I wouldnt think that reducing output pressure from the pump would affect the directional bias of the sector shaft , would changing the steering box freeplay help or correct this as there seems to be a fair amount of gear lash (though it is marked reman and less than 4 yrs old as far as I know):eusa_think:

There's a portasnorkel on top of the gearbox on early cars that you have to loosen up and adjust until you get all that out. It's right on top of the box on the end that the steering shaft attaches to the box. Do you have a factory service manual? The adjustment procedure is in there. It's easy to firgue out though. Basically, you just play around with it until it's right.

thanks I do have the FSM , portasnorkle is a new term for me , i will give it a once over this saturday . I was trying to improve steering feel by dropping the pump output pressure of the pump slightly by changing pressure relive valve shim stack , and made a small adjustment to the steering gear freeplay. :toothy5:

I have seen guys adjust "portasnorkle"valves then reach through the driver window and steering wheel spoke to start the car and get their forearm pinned when the car started and the steering wheel turned.

I had one screw up while driving down a narrrow one way street in Boston. Car truned hard left and right into a parking space. Do you know how hard it is to find a parking spot in Boston?
