I originally came with a 318 and a manual transmission. By the time I got it nearly ten years ago it had a 383 with a 727 and the shifter on the dash. No AC or radio and at the suspension is slightly more advanced than a Model T. But I like it!
My first pickup was a 69 LWB and to tell you the truth, the Dodge straight axle set up was the best handling straight axle pickup I ever drove! When I was in the AF, we had several 71's SWB's with 318's and 3.91 gears and they would run circles around the 72's when they came in. I 'cross trained' from cops over to transportation and that's when I started enjoying being in the military and whenever I had to make a run with a pickup, I requested a 71....
That is interesting Cranky! I've been anxious to find and drive a 70 or 71 in order to check out the suspension. My Uncle had a 71 years ago that I rode in but I was too young to know what to look for. I did go ahead and put a set of front disc brakes from the Ram Man which significantly helped out the handling performance.
I would think that they are pretty much the same as the 67's set up....Dodge was using the straight axle until 72 when they went to the independent suspension and coil springs on the front. My 69 drove much better than the 72's did too. I did have a 79 D300 Adventurer SE single wheel with 12.50-33 BFG Sport Truck Radials on it and it drove pretty good for a big truck but a 1 ton isn't going to have much lean in the turns lol. I've had several Dodge trucks during the 70's and 80's and they all had a good amount of lean unless you upgraded the suspensions on them. I was driving my dad's mid 60's mid Chevy pickups before I went into the military and they were much worse than any Dodge pickup of the 60's....AND 70's for that matter. The 71 Dodges I drove in the military were many heads above any of the Chevys my dad had and were the first Dodge pickups I ever drove and they impressed me with the way they acted on the back roads of Germany and they were just D100's. I was stationed at Hahn AFB and it was way out in the boonies and I guess you can say I got a good introduction to twisty roads lol
I used to be stationed in Germany as well (Hohenfels & Schwienfurt) and drove around those back roads . . . but unfortunately I was in a four-banger Opel.
