Here's a stupid question - as I open my trunk on the 68 satellite to change the burnt out bulb in the round housing, I am unable to just pull out the socket and change the bulb like on the rear tail lights. The bulb seems to be sealed in there somehow. Is there a trick? I do notice the housing in the trunk has a hex shape so is this to hold onto with a wrench? The service manual provides no guidance on this and I don't want to break something.

You should just twist the plastic light holder then pull. The hex is the nut to hold the lamp housing to the quarter.

So I checked both rear fender side marker lights in the trunk and the two on the sides of the front fenders. One of the lights in the trunk is just as you describe and the bulb is easy as pie to remove just as I would expect. The other 3 are not the same. From the outside of the car they appear the same, but where the wire goes in these other 3 are sealed somehow. There is no removable plastic housing and they are not budging. All 4 lights have an outer diameter thread I can see that threads into the hex housing to mount to the body. I guess I have to remove the entire housing from the body to change these?

Anyone else know what I'm talking about? I'm headed to work, but if not, I'll take some comparison photos tonight.

I don't recall exactly, but on the ones with the sealed socket you might try unscrewing the lens. I know they come apart somehow. Yes, the big hex is the nut that holds the lamp assy in.

Bulb Removing

You`ll have to remove the whole assembly. The bulb & or lens are only removable from the inside, but first the light socket inner hex nut must be unscrewed ,then the bulb socket housing must be unscrewed from the outer bezel, that`s right, a lot of unscrewing going on here. Now you can access the bulb or change the lens. This is from a 68 Charger, front, but same idea, I think, from what you have described.

Wow I guess I was lucky my 68 the metal bulb holder just snapped in and out of the houseing.. It was difficult and took some effort but the housing did not need to be removed. I would wonder if mother natures weld has adhered the metal tangs to the housing. Even if that is true you may have to remove them from the car to soak them in something like PB Max to resolve the corrosion

thanks for the very helpful photos 6pktgo!
Will try to get these apart new year's day. I sure would like to find 3 setups like the 1 snap in round light that I have. Looks the same from outside the car.
