I’m getting ready to go look at a 68 charger rt 440 magnum that supposedly has numbers matching engine and trans. It’s old and rusty and would be a restoration project, what are the main things I should be checking for to see if it is what it says it is?

Keep us posted on this. That’s exciting.
I’m sure others will guide you much better than I will.

Radiator support and trunk lip should match the fender tags last 6 of the SO number which is on the bottom right hand corner of the tag. It won't match the VIN as that didn't start that until 69. If it's a 4 speed it should have the Dana 60 rear in it factory as well. Torque boxes should be in the car by the rear leaf spring mounts in the front as the R/T cars had those as well. Some engines and transmissions were stamped in that year on the bellhousing area where they meet at the top by the oil pressure sending unit area, but that will match the VIN and not the SO number.

Does the owner have any documentation of the car? Buildsheet, window sticker, etc. First two letters should be XS in the VIN. In '68, engine blocks were stamped later in the production year which should be on the fender tag. Send some pics when you can.

Welcome and congratulations from Alabama. That's a heck of first post and a great find, if it checks all the boxes that @91r/t posted.

Torque boxes not a guarantee on 68. My 68 R/T 440 does not have them. Thread 'Torque Box info' Torque Box info

Good luck to ya!

I have found that most 67 GTX'S have torque boxes on the rear, but not the front. I was assuming that would be the case for other years.

Might be plant-dependent. I know of a '68 Coronet R/T, original owner with a late Sept '67 build that had both engine and trans stamped with last 8 digits of vin.

Thank you guys for your help, these are the pictures I have for right now, I will keep you updated.

68 Charger 69 grill, or front clip. Looks to be mostly there. If any of the numbers match, engine transmission, probably a 20K or more price tag in today's money. I have seen real junk sell for more.

If its a real RT hes asking more then $20 close to $30 Im thinking. Make sure you crawl under it and check the frame rails. Post pic of fender tag if possible Dont rush. JMO Auto RT most likely 8 3/4

I knew I had seen this car before
It was on FB a week ago

At this point I would be worried it has already been sold as they were asking a realistic price for it

I know I’ve been thinking that too because the guy never answered my messages, I had a friend of mine shoot him a message about the car and he got back to him about it right away so I’m not sure what the deal is but for whatever reason he hasn’t been answering me so I don’t think this is going to end up happening.
