Alright guys I need some pointers and tips on how to save these shifter cables. I installed a Hurst quarter stick shifter in a 68 coronet where the cable exits the front of the shifter. Well with TTI headers there is not much room for a cable as it wraps around the starter and runs close to the headers about two inches away. I melted mine on startup from radiant heat. I did not have any protection on it (stupid my fault). So I am going to wrap the new one in DEI heat wrap for wires Ect. I was also going to wrap the headers with header wrap where it is close to the cable. Do you think this will save my new cable. I also thought of some kind of heat shield but where do you mount it to. Anyhow any tips will be great this is frustrating and could get expensive quick cables are not cheap.

Thanks,

Jason

Stock column shifter here.

Can you get a shorter cable that doesn't go so far out? Wrapping with insulation or even making a shield are both good ideas. Also you may want to make a clamp or some bracket so it doesn't move and land on the header.

Thanks for the reponse keep them coming. This is my last issue to fix before i get to drive this monster. 3 years in the making.

wrap the headder pipe for sure.if the cable manages to touch it,it wont burn.as far as still using the cable;does it still move freely when not hooked up?if so you should be ok as long as it dosnt bind up when bent at the burnt spot.

The cable just melted about six inches. Once it melted it stuck and no more shifting. The cable is not touching anything and it still melted. I have a new one and I am getting ready to install it I just want to make sure this one last. I am thinking of getting a new shifter maybe. The Cheetah SCS but I think I will have problems with that also with my bouchellin kickdown. It looks like it uses the same brackets on the tranny for mounting.

I had this issue once and I went to the speed shop and bought the longest shift cable I could, then I was able to keep it away from anything hot.I never had a issue with it again. You can also buy some of the heat sleeve for plug wires and put them on the cable.

i run the cheetah scs shifter in all my projects and love it.it is very easy to run there cable on top of the trans and mount to keep it way out of the way of everything.

Do you also run the bouchelin kickdown or the factory style. I am not sure if you can use both without modifying one or the other. Anybody out there run both. Only reason I ask is I think the kickdown and the shifter linkage bracket utilize the same ear on the tranny for there cable brackets.

i run manual valve body trans to handle my motors so no linkage.the cheetah shifter linkage is behind the shift linkage and uses a new arm on the trans as well.they do use the same hole, but the buchillon one seems alot higher.(i looked at the install diagrams)you might be able to stack them, but dont know for sure.

Heres what I came up with looks like I amy have solved the problem.
