Stock replacement pistons are all pretty much the same. They are all "ok". Performance pistons would be an upgrade and IMO are worth it if you are looking to maximize the return on investment in performance. Forged racing pistons are a lot more $$ and frankly not needed for mild or medium output builds. In terms of bearing brands, the common ones are pretty much the same. Clevite, Sealed Power, Federal Mogul, etc. King would be IMO an improvement in materials and construction but unecessary for most stock or milder rebuilds.
Gentlemen,
My preference is Clevite trimetal, which translates to steel backed, babbitt with copper tin overlay. In my 440+6 engine I use full groove mains @ 0.0015 clearance. I buy 2 sets of mains, discard the bottom half of both, file off the tang one of the sets, and when installing, add 10-15 more lb/ft torque to bearing cap bolts (I use ARP hardware). I use ID mikes and snap gauges to measure clearances. Plasticgauge is OK, but I prefer mikes. I also use 0.0015 clearance for the rod bearings. I like TRW forged pistons @ 0.004/0.005 wall clearance and full floating pins with circlip retainers. I like moly faced rings and chrome plated scraper rails with 0.012/0.014 end gap. I use a high VOLUME oil pump using 10W30 Mobil 1. Oil pressure at hot operating temperature is 80psi. Overkill??? It depends on one's point of view ..... for me it's just right. Cast pistons (hypereutectic alloy ) are slightly cheaper and can run @ 0.002 clearance. .... you pay your money then take your choice. This is just my opinion.
Cheers,
