Gents,

Please make sure that you steel yourselves for the horror that I will expose here.

I bought this car to enjoy it for awhile before tackling a rebuild, all I wanted to achieve was to make the engine bay 'respectable', nothing more. I wanted to keep driving the car so I could'nt pull the engine out so had to work around it.
As you will probably be well aware, this is a major pain in the butt as it's pretty difficult to get some things out of the way and get paint down as well, so some very complex and imagitive masking of parts has to take place.

So, here is the BEFORE picture. This is how I got the car...ugh. I'll let this sink in for a few days and will post the AFTER pic on Sunday when I expect to finish the job.

ooooo yull getter try using aluminum foil for the hard to tape stuff works great like around wires brake lines everything,,,,,,,,,,Artie:yes::yes:

Ha, funny you should mention Aluminium foil, I thought of that a couple of days ago and went out and bought a roll last night thinking to myself 'what a great idea, I'm a genius, no-one will have thought of this!!!!!'

lol

Oven cleaner will remove the spray paint off the fire wall without taking the orginal paint off.
30 minutes with 4 cans from the Dollar General and a power washer and you'll be back to the factory paint.

it'll work great on the engine block as well.

Good luck Aussie! look forward to the pic's! Metal grade 3M scotch brite pads go a long way for preping surfaces..........

Thanks mate, yeah I've heard of the wonders of oven cleaner but refuse to use it as it's a womans chemical.

Initially, I thought the original paint was of good enough condition to try and just strip away the black and save it but the more black I removed the more I could see it was full of chips and surface rust, so it all has to go. I tried to save the purple paint on roadrunner horn by rather furious application of a rag and acetone but again, all it did was reveal chips and surface rust.

I'll try and remember the oven cleaner option for future projects, like my other beast.

Any Roadwarrior fans here?

Finished! A little ahead of schedule so I'll spend a day cleaning up the wiring, painting some brackets etc.

Overall, pretty happy with the result. The underside of the bonnet is a real let down but if I start going that far then I'm kinda defeating the purpose and would be better off spraying the entire car, which aint gonna happen.

The workshop during the process..

And, though it will send the purists into meltdown, the horn that was in the car and the restoration before and after shots. i think the paint is an excellent match.

looks like night and day diff. Was using some spray called SIMPLY GREEN on the engine bay on my wifes car, came out real good and didn't affect the original paint.

Seems to be alot of cars out there that have had a repaint or seven, if not a color change over the years....and yet nobody ever bothered with the engine bay.
Anyway Aussie, it looks alot better and you no longer have to come up with excuses as to why the hood won't open.
