Hello, i have my original Hurst 4 speed shifter (comp plus?) i am considering rebuilding if needed. Does anyone know if these are worth rebuilding or should i buy a new version? Is there anything to look for as far as wear, etc? I also don't know if the new Hurst comp plus units are any better than what was installed back in the day.

On a side note does anyone have an original Hurst non console shift lever they wanna part with? Mine is kinda rusty and pitted so i am not sure its worth restoring. Any help would be great, thanks!

You can always just have your original handle rechromed. As far as the box if you are going for an original type restoration I would use it. It is a factory hurst box and not the competition plus as it has no shifter stops on it and the box would also say comp plus. The shifter boxes can be rebuilt, but most of the time just need to be pulled apart cleaned, greased and put back together. Also Brewers is a great place to deal with and they can help you with all your 4 speed needs.

Now would be a good time to convert to a pistol grip-you would need a rebuilt box and shifter handle either way. All you would need additionally is a set of rods and swivels and you'll have a pistol grip. Just food for thought...

I prefer Passon performance. Jamie knows his S#)T!

is the competition plus a better unit than my stock one? I am not hung up on all factory parts so if its better that may be the answer.

If you go with a Competition plus, you will have to drill another hole in your shifter handle and make the other larger as they use 2 bolts instead of the clip.

If you are not concerned with originality, then you probably should sell the shifter and handle. I wouldn't drill a hole in it as it is probably worth more to the folks that want original pieces. I don't know about value, but you might get enough from the sale of these parts to fund the new shifter! Like I said - I don't know that as a fact, but check around on eBay, Hemmings, etc. to get an idea of worth...

I still have the original one too. I replaced it more than 20 years ago with the Competition Plus, which was in stock at Super Shops. I drilled a hole in the original handle and that's the way it is to this day. I didn't know it would be worth a million dollars back then. I used the original rods with the Competition Plus. I think I needed some bushings where the rods connect to the shifter.

I was looking at the original the other day and was wondering what to do with it. Think I'll just put it away and keep it and worry about it later. The Competition Plus is working fine. About once every 5 years I pull the boot off and squirt it with some kind of lubricant.

Really comes down to personal preference. I like a stock looking hurst shifter in these cars. I do not like a pistol grip in a 68-69 B body because they never came that way, but that is just me. If I was not going to race it I would just use the stock Hurst stuff. It is plenty good to get out and jump on. It has most likely been done that way for 40+ years. The comp plus boxes will have adjustable stops on the shifter box to keep you from breaking a synchro ring, but as I say it all what you plan to do with it. The hurst box is a giant leap over the inland unit.

The comp plus will provide a more positive feel but will also transmit more noise into the car. As pointed out you have the factory shifter and it's fine with a new rubber isolator. A rebuild pretty much consists of replacing parts, but if they are not excessively worn then a good cleaning and greasing is always a welcome touch. What typically goes bad is the pivot bolt and the hole in the handle mount. This is the 1/4-28 carriage bolt with nylon lock nut and that little steel strap. I rebushed my handle mount and got a new bolt, but I also have machine tools to perform such operations. There are plenty of places on those to eliminate slop and that will make a difference.
