Hi all, I have 69 RR 440 i had recently purchased, when i got it it could only start from jumping selinoid with screwdriver. Since I found a cooked neutral safety switch harness changed that neutral safety switch in tranny, and ignition switch and key cylinder and solenoid also. It will crank now with key and start after a few cranks, but not easy, seems to me low or high voltage going to coil causing hard start.
But you jump solenoid with screwdriver fires up first crank
any ideas on this ghost ?
Thanks

Are you jumping the solenoid down at the starter or the starter relay on the firewall?

The start circuit from the ignition switch to the starter relay is simple. When the key is turned to the start position (st terminal), battery is applied to the yellow wire. This wire connects to the starter relay via bulkhead connector #3, terminal T. Since you replaced the ignition switch check the connections at the bulkhead terminal. Old bulkhead terminals are the cause of many issues.

Thanks a bunch i will check them tomorrow.
This was a issue with this car a long time the whole system was messed with.
The strange thing is all the things i changed so far were bad guess the melted harness arched or something

Bulkhead wire was bad I ran a new one directly to ignition switch through firewall.
I was thinking the original one split off to coil or something causing current issue
I am tracing through wiring diagram but car was messed with and lots of taped off wires
Maybe when they upgraded to electronic ignition they taped off wires
Thanks

We've all seen horrible hack jobs on wiring harnesses whether it's switching ignitions or installing some after market gizmo. I guess it's a good time to check everything while you're at it. Sometimes the only solution is to replace the entire harness. Good luck.

All of my underhood wiring is replaced. Saved me much time and headaches. I understand they're expensive...but they're worth every penny.

Yes its a hack job you're rite, I am going through whole car that is a possibility I might have to get a new harness
lots of other things not working or working lights, gages ect....
Thanks for the help

Something else worth looking at, are the battery cables themselves. How old are they?
And, if they need replacing, chose wisely...some cables these days are junk.
