Trying figure out the wiring to the instrument cluster on a 69 Sport Satellite. The attached photo may be of some help to people. My question is, "what is the item on the left side, behind the gas gauge, that connects to 3 grounds ?"

I take it you're refering to the volt limiter (under the two mounts for the fuel gauge)...It converts the 12 volts coming in to 5 volts. They like to take a crap and there is a much better solid state version out on the market

As far as what you have circled as "alternator", that is your amnmeter. It displays the amp draw/charge in your system and that design has lighted up many mopars in flames in the past. Some folks (including myself) have coverted that to a voltmeter. If you're gonna leave it, as least make sure you have clean, tight connections on thost two studs.

Thanks for the reply Propwash

1. Sounds like my assumption of direction is wrong and that what I have marked as ground would actually be power side. Does that volt limiter mean that everything on the instrument cluster operates on a 5 volt supply ?

2. Would that solid state version of the volt limiter be available form somewhere like Summit ?

3. Did you convert the existing amnmeter to a voltmeter or just disconnect it and install a voltmeter elsewhere ?

4. What is the small Red Indicator Light just above the left turn indicator ?

I very much appreciate the comments and/or advice.

Thanks

I think that would be showing you that your high beams are on (the red light that is) I have a Rallye guage setup in my 68 Bee and that is what the red light lets me know. Jim

No problem....anytime. To answer your questions

No, not everything is ran on that 5 volt supply, your guages are...that's it.

Here's a couple of places to pick one up if you're looking to upgrade to the solid state version. Summit....didn't see one floating around their site, but didn't spend a whole lotta time looking.

If you run into a guage issue with your car, this limiter is a good place to start troubleshooting.

As far as the Amnmeter to voltmeter, I removed the guts out of it and superimposed a 2" sunpro voltmeter in the place of the old. Worked out great and cost me less that 20 bucks.

Here's a link to the resto thread on my roadrunner--Page 54 shows the amnmeter to voltmeter conversion. The two wires initially coming into the amnmeter I soldered together then used a simple 12 volt source off the fuse box to run the voltmeter.

If you're tossing around the idea of converting to a voltmeter, but not really up to taking a dremel to your cluster, Redline will do the conversion for you.

Milit73 has you covered on that red little light....it's your brights indicator light.

Hope it helps and have a good weekend.

Re-Posting the picture from above with the corrections people pointed out in case it's of some use to anyone else. Thanks again.
