can some tell me is there a difference in the length of the steering shaft on a70 b-body with power or manual steering.if so what are the lengths. mine is 42 inch long and seems to long for my power steering car.

For starters, power and manual cars have different length shafts, so you need to have the correct steering column for the steering box used. What A383 is talking about is the shaft that bolts to the box is a telescoping unit and could have been over extended at some point. This telescoping shaft is part of the collapsible steering column and needs to have a certain amount of collapsible space to maintain safety. I have had people tell me they hammered the shaft into the column on an original manual steering car when they made the conversion to power, which eliminates the space for the shaft to collapse into. I don't recommend this!

but if you drive the shaft in it colapses the tube that connects the two pieces of the shaft and makes the shaft inoperable. i guess you could rejoin the shaft by welding it or drilling some holes and screwing it together.notice the shiney part of the shaft, about 2 inches of the shiney part protrudes past the shift tube when the column is assembled
