I am swapping in a 4 speed and pulling my 904 in a 73 charger. Before I start this project I am trying to make sure I have my ducks in a row and need to know if the transmission will mount up. I was told that the 71-74 crossmember was the same for autos and manuals, but I see that the box-companies all supply crossmembers with their swap kits. I am using an A833. I did use the search function on the site but was unable to find what I needed.

So as a follow up, I came across a 23 spline some months ago locally and picked it up. However, now a friends dad who tried to put an 18 spline into a Chevelle, has given up as he had issues with the adapter and the length of the input shaft and smoked a clutch just unloading the car at the painter. I can pick up the 18 spline quite reasonably compared to current prices and he went through it before installing it in the Chevelle. I have a 72 forged crank engine, 6 bolt with the 130T flywheel and 10.5" bellhousing. My question, as long as I order the correct clutch and pressure plate, I should be good to go correct?

Which tail housing does it have? The one with just one shifter mount or the one with 2 shifter mounts which would be correct for your car?

Also have you checked the pilot shaft hole depth in the crankshaft. Not all automatic trans crankshafts where drilled deep enough or bored to right diameter for manual trans installation. If you can find one use the 11" pressure plate and 18 spline clutch for that flywheel. Do not think you will find a clutch disk small than 11" for the 18 spline input shaft.

70-72 130T 10.5 440 has the 18 spline and are available.

Also the 18 spline takes a different T/O bearing than the 23 spline. You can buy a new bearing but it doesn't come with the sleeve that it mounts onto. The sleeve can be hard to find.

There are several 10.5" 18 spline clutches available. It has the B/E tail housing with the dual shifter mounts. Sounds like that sleeve for the bearing might be a limiting factor. I am not familiar with that as I have only installed/replaced hydraulic clutches other than some heavy duty trucks. If I choose to run a hydraulic clutch is this still going to be an issue? I have not checked the crank for depth though either. I already have the 10.5" flywheel and bellhousing so I am hoping to use those. Thanks for the assistance.

A hydraulic T/O bearing should not be an issue. I've done it a couple time a few years back.
