A previous owner of my 71 Charger replaced the stock wheel studs in the 8-3/4 rearend axles, with extended length studs.

I don't know how they did it, but the studs are all loose in the flange.

I can't use the longer studs with the wheels I'm going to run, so I'm going to replace the axles.

I purchased new axles with stock length studs from Dr Diff, with green sealed bearings installed.
For $300.00 a set, I'm not going to mess around with the old axles.

Can I just pull out the old axles and install the new axles, or is there more to it than that.

Thanks

You will need to make sure the thrust blocks are out of the center section because of the Green Bearings. If the blocks are not removed, the axles won't fully seat. Other than that, and new inner seals, you will be fine.

You can't just pull the axle out enough to remove a stud and see if they are the wrong size?

Some Mopars are different front to back.

Might save a LOT of money.

I know you already bought the axles, but you can install the correct/shorter wheel studs by just taking off the brake drums.... piece of cake.... and since they're loose, the only tool you need is a lug wrench. If they were tight, you'd need a hammer too.

I tried pulling 1 of the axles out just enough to remove to extended studs, and replace with a standard length stud. All the holes in the flange were oversize and out of round. The stud just slips in. It looks like they were drilled oversize with a hand drill.

I just feel better going with the new axles.

Can I remove the thrust blocks with the carrier still in the axle housing, or do I need to remove the carrier?

Thanks

What about welding holes smaller and having holes re-drilled. Talked to Moser about it, think guy said $65 an axle? If you don't have a high powered engine and sticky tires could be the way to go?
