Hi gents, hoping an electrical guru can help me out :)

My car is a '72 Satellite Sebring.

I replaced my directional switch the other day, as the original had a worn cam and wouldn't lock to the left. The new aftermarket switch had only one connector, while the original had two. Everything seems to work okay with the new switch.....what purpose did this second connector have?

I have been wondering the same thing. My best guess is it is for the curse control. The '74 service manual has it as a 4 pin connector, but it has the same style connector as that 3 pin. Maybe the control got an upgrade between 72 and 74?

Cheers.

The three wires are purple, tan?, and light green with a black tracer.

Yeah, we have the exact same car/harness. Im installing a painless harness and using a '74 body manual wiring diagram as a reference. Those three wires doesn't exist in that diagram and the only other wires in the column are for cruse control and the ignition light

Those wires feed the hood mounted turn signals on a '70 model if that helps.

I thought the same thing until i looked at the 72 FSM. Cruse control is show with 4 wires to turn signal lever and run separate of the turn signal switch. Does the car have hood or fender turn signal lights? I have seen that connector before but the Chassis FSM does not show light wiring. Will check my RR tomorrow and see if it has it.

That is a C-body turn signal switch, the extra 3-wire lead is for cornering lights. Disregard when using in a car without cornering lights.
Appears the switch you are replacing was not quite correct, replacement looks correct.

That three wire plug was connected to the harness under the dash. Hood/fender mounted signal wiring did occur to me, although my car doesn't have them.

Nothing to do with the fender or hood mounted turn signal indicators. You say it was connected to the dash harness? Post a picture of what it was connected to. Find that hard to believe frankly, no cornering lights on anything but a C-body. C-body turn signal switches have been marketed as replacements for many other models for quite some time.
From '72 Chrysler FSM;

The wiring diagram I have has the fender signals and my car has them as well. I know how those are wired and these wires are not for them. I have my harness completely apart and these wires have nothing to connect to. I bet it was just installed at the factory like that and sowed it. Just because it was for a c-bocy dosen't mean they didn't mix it up and put it in a B-body. I know stuff go screwed up at the factory sometimes: my dad's Cuda came with challenger trim on the one side.

I also believe they are for cars that come equipped with cornering lights. It's definitely NOT Cruise, and I believe fender mounted turn signals feed from the harness that feeds the parking/turn signal lights up front in the lower valance.
