Hey guys I am a newbie have some basic questions. I currently have a 65 dodge coronet with a 318 block (1967-1975 casting number 2536030 318-3) bolted to a torqueflite A-727-A (dodge late 65 8-318 casting number 2466166). The engine is shot and I have a rebuilt cast crank 440 long block (casting # 4-6-77 # 4006630-440-4) that I would like to put in. Will it bolt right up to that transmission?

This is going to be a street rod, it's a four door *** hauler/cruiser

do I need to change the torque converter?

i need to get a intake, carb, distributor, dampener , what do you guys suggest?

Dang that sucks.... The guy I bought it from told me it used to have a 440 in in... The transmission seems to be original to the car, but the 318 came out of a 70's dodge van. The car is a 440 model. I'm confused and now it have a 440 long block that I can't use. What transmission would I need to find? I should just rebuild the 318 that's in it, it lost compression on a few cylinders.

Just because it's a coronet 440 doesn't mean it has a 440 in it - remember, Dodge didn't put 440's in anything till '66, and didn't make it into b bodies till '67, in this case, 440 is a trim level, and in '65 a Coronet 440 was in the middle between a base model and a 500

you need a big block 727 to go behind the 440

You can use the 440, just get a 727 torqueflite that came behind anything from a 361-383-413-426 wedge-or 440. I am currently using a 727 from a 68 Dodge Monaco 383 car. And that thing works great! They are all over the place. Start on C List. I have 3 of them.

And they run anywhere from $75 to $150

Right on, I just found one, a guy pulled his running 440 and 727 out of a 1981 dodge fireball RV. He said the RV was rotten out beyond repair so he pulled the engine and trans and scrapped the RV. he said it has 27000 miles on it, running. It also had air conditioning on it which is something I want to add to my car. How can I be sure that this will go right into my car? He wants $1000 for it. I asked him to get me the casting numbers and a overall length of the transmission to make sure it's not something odd ball for RVS. Is 81 too new? I could use his engine and trans...but would my rebuilt 440 fit it if I needed to use it?

where in Colorado are you? I have been searching for BB 727 for 2 months now. I finally found one in pueblo. every 727 I have found is a short tailshaft. I have yet to find one under 250 dollars , and that is sold as a core

you need to make sure it is a long tailshaft, and 35" long, chances are it wont have the bosses for a floor shifter , if that is a requirement for you. I think 1,000 bucks is steep myself.

$1000 is way too much. I have a builder 727 you can have for $75. Worked good, except 2-3 upshift would be slow after warm up. High clutch is probably gone.

Hey WP29440SE, PM me if interested.

The 1000 is for the engine also, So I'm looking for 35" from front bell housing flange to the tail?

yes. it will measure right about 35 inches

The guy called back, said it's about 25" and the last 8" unbolts from the trans. Sounds like this is a short tail and won't work, I got another source to check on.

On my 727 small block, how do you get this control cable off? I've tried everything but I don't want to damage it. 20140726_102546.jpg20140726_102638.jpg

65 727 was cable operated shifter
you will not be able to use the the 727 you are getting with push button shifter
you will also have to make sure you have the correct kickdown linkage otherwise the trans will burn in up in no time

The early push start 727 had two pumps the regular one and a rear pump... it's a lot stronger and more buildable trans.... other than what bolts up the guts can be built.... if you don't study up on it you can waste a lot of money on stuff you may or may not need... a 318 poly to LA 360 would be my choice of conversion than the 440 because of all the work and a hoped up 360 would be easy power....

65 was also the first year of the slip yoke.

Do you guys know how that cable comes off? See pic. The trans I have in here is the 727 LA late 65, it has a shifter on the column and has two control cables. This doesn't have push buttons. So ya if I was to get a bb 727 I would have to get a non push button.

shifter is still cable operated if there are 2 cables
been years since I worked on a unit in the car
I am away right now (in Canada with my son for hockey)
when I get home I will check some of the old manuals I have
