first gear is somewhat noisy and seems to want to stay in first . once it shifts to second /third it is quiet and smooth . any guesses what is the problem ? first auto all my cars have been manual

Can you describe the noise a little more? What does it do in reverse?

Could be something like a sticking valve in the valve body, down to a burned band, or the like.

its a whine , nothing wrong with reverse . thing is everyone asks how long between putting it in gear and the "clunk " but it goes into gear immediately no delay what so ever

If there's no delay on the shift, x out the shift body. The whine sound probably parts going south, like the mentioned gear set.

Mine whines a lot in first - understood to be the planetary gears. Is a lot of whine versus a little whine a sign of them going south?

don't know if its a lot or a little , its a noise inside the car that I've never heard with a 4 speed .
doesn't make people turn and look so guessing its not to loud outside

How many miles since fluid change? I kinda go with planetary also, if u drop pan you'll know how bad it is by how much metal u see in pan; usually u see friction material not much metal.

they did a "service" while replacing leaking pan gasket when doing motor mounts /freeze plugs . new fluid/filter . also has had a bottle of Lucas transmission fix that I put in on their recommendation for smoother shifts . like i said 2/3 and reverse are quiet and smooth and it goes into gear instantly without any delay ( no clunk) its only 1st that whines and seems to " hang up" once it does shift into 2nd everything is great

If it's a whining noise, my bet is a planetary needle bearing. It will get louder if that's the issue. Drop the pan. If it's a failed planet needle bearing the pan will be filled with debris that will look like a Chia Pet on a magnet.

That is really hard to say, without looking at them. Could be only one pinion, or the whole set. Only takes one to make noise. Only the builder knows for sure.
Wouldn't go ape over it. Just keep track of your fluid, watching for metal in it, or burn.
Doesn't take that much on a set of pinion gears, to make noise, if things aren't right on. That's why many time on an overhaul, the whole cage gets changed out.

Will add, though...can it get worst...yeah. All depends on that part, and what you want to do about it. Makes for a little tear-down.

In 35 years of trans building I've seen only 2 failed planet needle bearings. Only one pinion only in each case. The last one had enough metal in it that the rooster comb ball/spring got jammed and the shifter wouldn't move. Cleaned eveything, one new planet and a filter and it was good to go.
