I have a 70 B body with a 1965 727. I just swapped out my blown up 383 for a 440. The engine sits higher now, especially with the new bracket I installed designed for RPM heads. I changed out the OEM bracket. The new bracket horizontally levels out the kick down/carburetor rod more.

My car used to have strong shifts and the kick down worked, but now it doesn't.

I pushed the throttle to WOT and the pushed the kick down carburetor rod back all the way, leaving about a 1/8 inch space between the throttle and kick down for it to travel further if needed. I wasn't sure if there if it needed a little play??

I am going home tonight and remove that space to see if it helps.

QUESTION: Since the engine is higher, does that effect how far the vertical transmission rod travels downwards possibly not pulling the transmission lever forward enough? Is there an adjustment on the bracket where the vertical transmission rod and the lever on the side of the tranny connect?

If so, can/should I adjust the lever by pushing it as far forward as possibly and tighten it and then go back up top and adjust the kick down carburetor rod and throttle to get the desired shifting?

If your using the 383 rod, the vertical rod is now to short, as the 440 is taller. If that is if I understand you right.

I think you hit the nail on the head. You'd have to extend the kickdown rod for the taller block so it can press on the kickdown lever on the trans.

if thats a 65 trans it would have had a one piece kick down rod and no easy way to adapt a 70 kick down linkage.

I've lengthened the vertical rod by cutting it and welding in a piece of 5/16" tubing over the cut ends. Roughly 3/4" longer. That main thing is when the carb is wide open the lever at the trans needs to be all the way back. If the carb was changed the length between the cable attachment and throttle shaft may be different. That will change the distance that the trans lever travels.
