Have a 1962 Plymouth with a 727 push button that shifts fine most of the time. Periodically it will fail to go forward or back. When this happens you can hear a whine probably from the pump?

What happens when it does that in order to work again ? I take it you have checked the fluid in neutral on level ground ? Ron

Yes fluid level is OK. Don't know why it starts working when it does! Haven't driven the car much but it has done this for the past 2 owners.

Pull the pan and check the filter. If it won't go either direction it can't be one single failed component unless it is the converter or the pump. Highly unlikely that either would be intermittent. My bet is the filter is clogged. Why is it clogged? Time for a tear down.

The whine noise does make it seem like a clogged filter like DVW said. I had a car that would all the sudden just stop and not move as it was towed in the shop. I got in a drove it all around and even called the cust to find out what was going on then on my third drive it just stopped like going into neutral while driving. I took the trans down and found nothing so I replaced the pump and conveter and it fixed it. But I know most of the time when I get a loud whine its a clogged filter or cooler. Ron
