727 sitting outside

Hello mopar family, I just got a 727 torque flight for free. It was sitting outside in the elements. I can shift it by hand. I cleaned the outside gunk off it. Now I'm looking for guidance on how to inspect to see if it's "good". I can't afford to send it off to a transmission shop. Thanks for any suggestions.

Does it have a converter in it? If so its pretty well sealed up. Flip it over and pull the pan. Drain it first

No converter with it. I know that water got in there though. The dipstick tube was sealed with a plug of some sort. I will pull the pan and drain it.

It looks like that trans has been sitting outside in the crap for a long time. I would be reluctant to just stick it in a car and hope for the best. Automatic transmissions don't take kindly to sitting around for long periods of time without being run and warmed up. Seals go bad, valve body plugs stick, etc. etc........ The trans could have been completely shot when it was pulled from the car or truck it came out of. I wouldn't bother installing it in a car without a full teardown inspection and rebuild. If you can't afford it now, wait till you can. JMHO.

Appreciate the honesty. I was reading about doing it myself. It seems that if I have a good book, a clean workspace, and patience I can pull it off.

Motor home trans? Also, some 3/4 ton long wheel base Club Cabs used that trans. Short tail shaft with a bolt on yoke......which cars do not use. It should have 4 planetary gear sets tho. Free stuff is always good and you can swap tail shafts out so it'll work in a car.

Well, im discouraged now. So there is a long story behind where im at with this car. But basically my best friend bought me a engine and transmission out of a motorhome pull. I found out that the transmission wouldn't work. So when I picked up my freshly serviced heads. I get the transmission thrown in with the price. So now I have two 727 big block transmissions that wont work due to tail shaft size, which from what im reading should be 18" long from the main case.

What do you suggest I do now? The other trans I got was kept in a garage and had the torque convertor on it. Is it better to find another transmission or buy parts to make one these two work?

Replace tail shaft and housing with one of the length needed. You can get this from any 727.
 
Check your local craigslist. I have found big block long shaft 727 as cheap as 75 bux. bring some tools and blow it apart as far as the seller will let you. Otherwise you have to pull it apart to put the right shaft in and tail housing (which they sell seperately) if you go this route just rebuild what you got.

This guy is local to you and has a 440 with a 727 attached. May be the correct trans and he may seperate it. Cost nothing to ask him. His prices are cheap to me so he may be your best bet.

I appreciate the reply. I have looked around my area (killeen,tx) and I found one for 200. I might have to go to the junkyards and pull one out of something. Maybe they would take my two for their one
 
Keep yours for parts. You should be able to find something in a junkyard or swap meet. Small block stuff will work too

Get a good book about the Torqueflite transmissions and you'll shortly see the differences....for example, most passenger car transmissions had the 3 planetary gear sets while the high performance had the heavy duty stuff. The heavy duty stuff came straight off the truck transmission inventory shelves. Same thing for the Dana 60 rear ends. It was in trucks a long time before they found their way into the factory hot rods....

Okay. I have some reading to do then, because I don't know what planetary gears are. It sounds like the two transmission I have are worth keeping for the heavy duty internal parts. I would just need to find a long tail housing and long tail shaft and get a rebuild kit. Any suggestions for which 727 book would best help me in my situation. Thanks for all the input guys. This is exactly what I've been needing for years.
 
You will need to change main shaft as well.If you can not find the parts to change it over pm me. I have what you need in my parts stash.
